CHAPTER 1

ORGANIZATION

1 ABOUT THIS MANUAL

TELES develops its products with one eye on solid functionality and practical implementation, and the other planted
firmly on flexibility and user friendliness. That's why every access gateway TELES delivers comes with the GATE
Manager remote administration software.
The GATE Manager is a user-friendly, Windows-based, hands-on remote-administration application that runs on
any current Windows system. Install the GATE Manager on a laptop and remain in the know and on the go.
Whether your network consists of 100 TELES end-customer access gateways of different types, TELES infrastructure
network elements running a variety of software versions, or of a single device serving a one-room office, the GATE
Manager makes sure you can access and edit your network configuration anytime, anywhere. All you need to do
is connect to the system via IP or ISDN.
The GATE Manager helps you expand your network without having to withstand unnecessary growing pains. You
can create, edit and add network elements effortlessly. With the TELES.GATE Manager, you can upload configura-
tions online for new access gateways, delete old ones from the network, or fine-tune existing configurations.
At TELES, we understand that you want to know what your network is doing at all times. At the click of a mouse
you can retrieve detailed, up-to-the-minute information and statistics on each access gateway in your network, and
on all of the traffic running through it. That way you can determine potential trouble spots preemptively and opti-
mize the flow of traffic in your network.
In the unlikely event that a access gateway experiences a problem, the GATE Manager includes a trace option for
pin-pointing the trouble. You can also use an external trace tool to display and break down the trace data. Of
course, you will never have to travel to a network element to restart it. With the GATE Manager's remote restart
function, the system's power button comes to you.
While you are watching your network elements, you can also use GATE Manager to keep an eye on the revenue
your network produces. Use your GATE Manager to retrieve CDRs, including status and statistical values, from all
network elements.

CHAPTER 4

SETTING UP NETWORK ELEMENTS

The System Editor

System name contains the symbolic name of the network ele-
ment. The network element appears in the table under this name.
As far as the structure of the saved data is concerned, a subdirec-
tory is created in the group’s directory for each network element.
The subdirectory bears the same name as its network element.
Remote number contains the IP address or phone number used
for remote maintenance of the network element and looks like
this:
IP:<ip addr> or IP:<host.domain>
Example: IP:192.168.1.1

Figure 4.2 Edit System

i
Port 4445 is used for GATE Manager access via TCP. Bear in mind that security mea-
sures are necessary for connections to remote systems outside of the LAN. If you have
assigned a different port in the remote system, use the following format in remote
number:
IP:192.168.1.1:1111
This coresponds with the parameter MoipPort=1111

The remote number corresponds to the mapping configuration for the RemoteCode parameter. You can enter a
"minus" (-) sign after the area code and then the phone number (e.g. 030-39920), but it is not required.
Check Use FTP to transfer files to transfer files via FTP. Enter an FTP User and FTP Password in the appro-
priate boxes.
Enter the SIP Port to which SIP Invite messages are to be sent. Enter the callback listen port in the CB Listen Port
box.
The other text boxes are automatically filled in by GATE Manager when making the first connection to the network
element.
Use Edit / Edit System to change the settings for a network element and Edit / Delete System to delete a
network element.
You can export the data relating to the network elements to a text file or Excel spreadsheet using File / Export
Group Data to...
You can import the data relating to the network elements from a text file or Excel spreadsheet using File / Im-
port...

CHAPTER 4

SETTING UP NETWORK ELEMENTS

Special ISDN Remote Access Scenarios

The following options apply for remote connections with different service indicators.
In some countries it is necessary to use a service indicator other than DATA to establish a remote connection. It
may occur that the service indicator changes or that calls with DATA are not connected.
In the following examples, 777 and BBB are used for the call number and remote code, respectively:
Enter the following configuration in the pabx.cfg:
RemoteCode=BBB
Example 1 The following entry ensures that the system will connect all data calls to the number 777 to the
remote interface:
MapAll777=BBB DATA
No changes are required in the GATE Manager’s configuration.
Example 2 The following entry ensures that only voice calls to 777 are mapped to the remote interface:
MapAll777=*0700*BBB VOICE
The following entry appears in the GATE Manager’s remote number:
t<number> (a t in front of the remote number)
Example 3 The following entry ensures that only teletext calls to 777 are mapped to the remote interface::
MapAll777=*0700*BBB
The following entry appears in the GATE Manager’s remote number file:
*<number> (a * in front of the remote number)
The variations in Example 2 and Example 3 present solutions to establish a connection. If you send voice calls as
remote calls, the carrier may compress the data, which can cause a bad connection.
Another option is to restrict the OAD when a system has only one telephone number:
Restrict9<yournumber>=bla
MapAllbla=*0700*BBB
or all the other variations in the examples above.

CHAPTER 5

STATISTICAL INFORMATION

Table 5.3 Statistical information (continued)

Column Meaning
ASR 1-2 Answer Seizure Ratio. Percentage of calls that resulted in a connection. Calculates the ra-
tio of aborted connections to completed connections. ASR1 does not regard connection
attempts aborted by the A subscriber as aborted connections. ASR2 does. The ASR shows
the availability of individual ports. A disparity between the ASR at one port and the other
ASR values could indicate a B channel/GSM channel problem.
ACD Average call duration of connected calls (in seconds). If the average duration is lower than
at other ports, a problem may exist in the B channel/GSM channel (e.g. no sound, no re-
corded announcement, etc.)
Count A - H For GSM ports. Counts are the time slices for the individual SIM cards (1-8). When a SIM’s
set time limit is reached, the channel will disconnect and the next SIM will log on. Click
Reset/Set Counters in the Statistics context menu to reset the counters (default value
is 0).
Duration Displays the total length of all calls through this port (in seconds).
Limit A-H For GSM ports. Shows the configured time span for the GSM port’s SIMs when the param-
eters CHANGE or CONTINUE are configured in the pabx.cfg.

The systems create trace files when the TraceLog=file entry is present in the pabx.cfg. You can carry out an offline
trace by making a connection to the network element and select Commands / Trace / Start Offline Trace (or
use the corresponding toolbar icon).

i
Online traces can result in trace errors or system crashes when the system is operat-
ing at full capacity or when transmission errors occur. To avoid this risk, it is recom-
mended that you use offline traces.

You can carry out an online trace by making a connection to the network element and select Commands / Trace
/ Online Trace (or use the corresponding toolbar icon).

Figure 5.6 Trace Configuration

Only on PC systems are you able to select which layers (2 and 3 or just 3) should be displayed. You can select the
protocol to trace by checking DSS1/NI2 or SS7.
If you check Translate trace, the hexadecimal code will be translated into standard text for the layer checked.
To save the trace, activate the Create trace file option. A file name taking the format JJJJMMDDhhmm.trc
is provided automatically. You can rename the file using File name.
In the Port to Trace section, you can limit the trace to the specified ports.
In the IP Trace group box, you can select the functions you would like to trace and the level of detail you would
like to see for each function you select.
If you are using the CAS R2 protocol, select the Timeslot(s) that you would like to trace. Activate the General
Traces checkbox to trace events that do not correspond with specific timesolts and/or controllers. In the Level
group box, select Info and R2 State Machine to check the CAS R2 connection setup. The other selection options
are for detailed information about the internal process and are not necessary for most traces.
