Sample Problems for Rectifiers and Filters:

Example #1: A 5:1 transformer is connected to a half half-wave

wave rectifier circuit with a 50kΩ
50k load.
Find (a) Vp; (b)Ip; (c) Idc; (d) Iac. Input voltage is 220Vpk.

Example #2: Assuming the diode in the circuit is ideal, sketch Vin, VD, ID, VL and IL for the half-
wave rectifier using the 6.8kΩ
Ω as the load.

Example#3: Calculate the peak current and show the output waveform for a full-wave
full center-
tapped rectifier with an input voltage of 10Vpk and a load of 1kΩ.
Ω. The internal resistance of the
diode is 20Ω. Use Vf = 0.7V. Transformer turns ratio is 4:1.
type rectifier with an input voltage of 220Vac and a transformer turns ratio
Example#4: A bridge-type
of 5:1 is terminated with a load RL=1kΩ.
Ω. Sketch the output voltage and current across the load.

Example#5: Draw the output voltage of the bridge rectifier shown. Notice that all diodes are
reversed from previous circuits.
Example#6: Design a full-wave
wave bridge type rectifier circuit with an input voltage of 120Vac and a
transformer turns ratio of 1:2. The circuit must have a Pac=4.8W across the load.

substitute (1) to (2):

4.8=0.5(339.46)Ip
Ip=28.28mA
therefore, R=12kΩ

Example #7: Determine the ripple factor of the circuit.

Example #8: Compute for the ripple voltage.

Example #9:A full-wave center-tapped

tapped circuit is used to rectify a sinusoid of 120Vrms at 60Hz. If
the minimum output voltage cannot drop below 100V and the load resistance is 5kΩ, 5k what size
capacitor is needed across RL? The transformer turns ratio is 1:2.
