Title: The use of InSAR time-series analysis for long-term subsidence monitoring in plain

aquifers of Iran

Authors: Mahdi Motagh, Mostafa Esmaeili

Abstract:

Under favorable conditions, Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture RADAR (DInSAR)

has proven to be an ideal method for measuring ground surface displacements at cm
accuracy. Temporal and geometrical decorrelations and atmospheric artifacts are major
limitations of this technique, which make it unsuitable for deformation monitoring in some
regions.

Two new time-series approaches have been proposed to deal with these limitations, namely
the Persistent Scatterer (PSInSAR) and the Small Baseline (SBAS) methods. In this paper, we
present the results achieved by applying InSAR time-series methods to monitor
groundwater-induced subsidence in several plain aquifers in central and northeast of Iran,
including Tehran, Rafsanjan, Zarand and Mashhad.

We show in several areas significant subsidence of more than 20 cm/year for the time
period of 2002-2007. The presented results in this paper show the capability of both SBAS
and PS methods for long-term monitoring of ground subsidence in plain aquifers of Iran.
