Tacoma General Hospital 315 South K Street =~ ,Tacoma, Washington 98404 ee ee Dear Charli > Re: ‘Proposed Research Project I have just returned from a vacation, and 1 would like to clarify what I told you previously on the telephone about the approval of your re- search project. > The project has been approved for one year on the basis of the proposal you outlined to me in your letter of June 19, 1967. This, as you know, differs to some extent from the proposal which you submitted to the Council for Tobacco Research - USA in February of this year, which was for a three-year grant at a somewhat higher figure. The project will be funded by the CTR as a "Special Project," which is to say that the “project is approved by the CTR staff rather than by its Scientific Advisory Board, In order to receive the funds, it will be nec- essary for you to write a letter to Mr. W.T. Hoyt, Executive Director of the CTR, outlining the project and requesting the amount which was Stated in the budget included in your letter of June 19, In order to save you time, I have : redrafted the June 19 letter in a form which I believe will be acceptable to the CTR as an application for the funds. In the letter, I F ‘Dr. C.P. Larson -2- September 12, 1968 have redrafted Paragraph 2 on page 2 in an attempt to explain somewhat more precisely what would be done in the way of examinations of the bronchial epithelium and I hope that I have correctly stated what it is you intend to do in that regard, I have inserted a sentence referring to the number of lungs you expect to examine, which is an item of information that the CTR’would like to have. I would appreciate it if you would insert a reasonable estimate of the number of lungs that would be examined. I have also taken the liberty of stating that the study would be commenced immediately, but I realize that acquiring and setting up the equipment may take a little time. If you would like to change that sentence to state that the project will commence at some specified date, please do so. I hope that all of this is satisfactory to you, and I regret the necessity of putting you to this initial trouble. Please let me know by telephone if you have any questions or problems concerning this matter. With best personal regards. Sincerely, Alex Holtzman AH:pe Attachment
