5S+1S is a structured method to improve workplace organization, standardization

and security in the office.


It aims to improve WORK EFFICIENCY, PRODUCTIVITY and SECURITY!
STEP 1: SORT - (Seiri : 整理) "Identify what is needed and get rid of what is not
needed!"
• Clearly distinguish useful from useless; eliminate unnecessary items
• Check if all “Necessary items” are available at the workplace.
• Do not forget to look to desk drawers. There may be unneeded items too.
What will happen then?
• Problems in the work "flow" will be reduced / easier and quicker retrieval
• Communication between workers will be improved
• Wasted space will be reduced
STEP 2: STRAIGHTEN – (Seiton : 整頓) "Organize area & place each item in its
optimal position in the workplace to eliminate searching!"
• Decide WHERE to place and HOW to place.
• Create RULES for storage.
• Keep one drawer for your personal items.
What will happen then?
• Files and documents needed for a task will be in place and easy to find!
• Many types of waste will be eliminated!
• Straighten is the key for standardization!
STEP 3: SANITIZE- (Seiri : 整理) "Keep items and work area tidy!"
• Keep your desk clean!
• Extract concerns & make countermeasures!
• Investigate the “Root Cause” of dirty and make countermeasures!
What will happen then?
• Motivation will be increased!
• Everything will be ready to use!
STEP 4: STANDARDIZE- (Seiketsu : 清潔) "Maintain an orderly, clean & useful
working area!"
• Create a regular way to carry out tasks and procedures
• Add SORT – STRAIGHTEN - SANITIZE into regular work duties
What will happen then?
• Motivation will be increased!
• First three steps will be standardized as daily work task!
STEP 5: SUSTAIN- (Shitsuke : 躾) "Monitor 5s & ensure that it is continuously
maintained!"
• Develop performance system to ensure long-term effect!
• Make 5S+1S part of our work "culture"
What will happen then?
• You will influence your work culture!
• You will work more efficiently in a better environment
STEP 6: SECURITY- (Security : セキュリティ) "Always put security first!"
• Identify data to protect.
• Ensure that everything is done in the security check list
• Lock the drawers and cabinets before you leave.
What will happen then?
• Company information and business related data will be kept safe!
• Data leak will be prevented!
