An HSK Level 1 Chinese-English Communicative Crossword Puzzle with English clues and Chinese answers.
Pairs of stduents sit face to face. Their puzzles are hidden behind a textbook cover or a notebook. Students take
turns asking each other for the words they are missing. They can either use the supplied English clues or make up
their own Chinese clues (using paraphrases or gapped sample sentences, for example)

Tonal Pinyin uses tone letters at the end of each syllable to force students to remember accurate tones.

The shapes of the capital letters at the ends of syllables are visual mnemonics for the tones.
1st tone = T (crossbar = macron)
2nd tone = Z (diagonal stroke = Acute accent)
3rd tone = M (two middle strokes = haček)
4th tone = K (last downstroke = grave accent)

Thus, the Chinese phrase “China is great!”

ZhongTguoZ weiMdaK
