Disciplines of Medicine and Bio-sciences mg & A E el a ® sy io} oy et a 3 29 MEDICINE AND BIO-SCIENCES EDUCATION AT NUST TH) Medicine ‘Medicine is the art and science of healing. t encompasses a range of healthcare practices to maintain and restore health through prevention and treatment of Ines. Contemporary medicine includes health science, bio-medical research and mecical technology to diagnose and treat injury and disease, typically through ‘medication, surgery or some other form of therapy. ‘Medicine is concerned with the training of knowledgeable, caring, competent and skilful professionals who show 2n understanding of health and disease, The medical curriculum followed at Army Medical College (AM College}, a constituent college of National University of Sciences and Technology, consists of learning about the science of human body in health and disease (pre-clinical years) and then a period of applying thet knowledge during an interaction with patients (clinical years). The college offers unique programmes that combine the art of communicating effectively with patients, through the science of human body. Teaching is, built on inter-disciplinary units of study, and taskebaced learning is focused on clinical cases or concitions. There is a distinct emphasis on problem-solving and developing the powers of clinical reasoning. Throughout the programme, students are given supervised study projects in order to introduce them to each stage through continuous and end-of-stage assessment. This is designed to explore attitudes and monitor acquisition and utilisation of core knowledge. Bio-sciences The discipline of Bio-sciences at NUST covers the broad areas of Virology and Immunology. The field of Virology caries extreme importance for Pakistan, as expertise in this area is critical for the development of cost-effective and sensitive assay for viral infections. The halimark of all viruses is to induce molecular gene expression, leading to aberrant cellular alterations that are responsible for over 500 major viral-inéuced diseases. Viruses infect all organisms including bacteria, plants, fungi, protozoa and the human population. Itis ‘estimated that ene fourth of the Pakistani population ie infected with one or multiple forms of viruses. A glaring example is the viral hepatitis, which is the most reported common cause of liver diseases in Pakistan. It is caused by 6 hepatitis viruses, hepatitis B and C being the most virulent. Similarly, itis imperative to provide the health sactor with a much needed scientific link between diseases and their immunological basis in order to help affected duals. Thisis where the field of Immunology comes into play. A major section of our population is suffering from various types of autoimmune diseases and allergic disorders. Currently, there Is very ittle understanding. about the immunological basis of various diseases in the physicians’ community, The ciscipline of immunology is, accorded least importance and is generally taught by rnon-professionals at most medical colleges anc Universities in Pakistan. Although a few private centres in the country are offering allergic tests and ciagnostics; but these are either very basic or lack highly skilled and trained experts. NUST is rightly credited with taking the Inigative totrain not only the workforce in this, particular field, but also provide the best diagnostic centre for various immunological dysfunctions at the NUST Centre of Virology and immunology.
