 Foreword
One of the objectives the architects’ collective is working on
is to find the new terrain of architecture, beyond the prevailing
formalistic criteria of recent times, to redefine the boundaries
of architecture in a world increasingly aware of the value of
the resources at its disposal. This search rests on two pillars:
knowledge and research, which are the tools that we have to
face the challenges the future has in store for us.
In the Spanish pavilion, knowledge is symbolised by the large
network of Spanish libraries specialised in town planning and
architecture, where to compare and analyse valid proposals
beyond our borders, establish communication with other
investigations and projects and exchange information on
creative architectural and town planning projects with no space
or time barriers. This effort is represented in research workshops
and centres, whose aim is to direct the search towards new
boundaries and a new terrain where architecture is placed at
the service of the principles of environmental, economic and
social sustainability, in keeping with the moment in history we
happen to be living in.

Prólogo
Uno de los objetivos en los que el colectivo de arquitectos trabaja
es encontrar el nuevo territorio de la arquitectura, más allá de los
criterios formalistas que han predominado en los últimos tiempos,
para redefinir los límites de la arquitectura en un mundo consciente
del valor de los recursos a su disposición. Esta búsqueda se asienta
sobre dos soportes: el conocimiento y la investigación, que son las
herramientas con las que contamos para afrontar los retos que nos
depara el futuro.
En el pabellón español, el Conocimiento se simboliza con la importante
red de bibliotecas españolas dedicadas al urbanismo y la arquitectura,
para confrontar y analizar, más allá de nuestras fronteras, las
propuestas válidas, establecer comunicación con otras investigaciones
y proyectos, intercambiar información sobre las obras de creación
arquitectónica y urbanística sin barreras espaciales ni temporales.
Esta labor está representada en los talleres y centros de investigación,
que tienen la finalidad de dirigir la búsqueda hacia los nuevos límites
y hacia un nuevo territorio en el que la arquitectura se desarrolle al
servicio de los principios de la sostenibilidad ambiental, económica y
social, acordes con el momento histórico que nos toca vivir.

Architecture engages thus in the debate surrounding the
construction of new paradigms, in the reflection on the social
changes and the changes in our relationship with the environment
which will take place over the 21st century, and it faces up to,
with its insight and work, the challenges posed by widespread
communication technologies, renewable energies, technological
changes and new materials.
The boundaries of architecture are defined beyond the individualistic
proposals characteristic of energy-wasting times, and now, in a
world subject to profound changes in its model of growth, where
having more will not be a necessary requirement for living better,
bigger budgets are no longer a conditioning factor for constructing
better. As relevant architects from our country point out in the
pavilion, the current wish of professional architects is to act as
a recipient and auscultate the most pressing needs of society
and the natural environment; their will is to take advantage of the
challenge posed by these times of change to redirect the efforts
and respond to a social demand which has also changed.

La arquitectura entra así en el debate en torno a la construcción de
nuevos paradigmas, en la reflexión sobre los cambios sociales y de
relación con el entorno que se producirán a los largo del siglo XXI, y se
enfrenta, con sus conocimientos y su trabajo, a los retos que plantean
las extendidas tecnologías de comunicación, las energías renovables,
los cambios técnicos o los nuevos materiales.
Los límites de la arquitectura se definen más allá de propuestas
individualistas propias de tiempos de despilfarro energético, y ahora,
en un mundo sometido a los profundos cambios en su modelo de
crecimiento en el que tener más no será una condición necesaria para
vivir mejor, mayores presupuestos tampoco significan una condición
para construir mejor. Como señalan en sus reflexiones, presentes en
el pabellón, relevantes arquitectos de nuestro país, el anhelo actual de
los profesionales de la arquitectura es servir de recipiente y auscultar
las necesidades más acuciantes de la sociedad y del entorno natural;
su voluntad, aprovechar el reto que representa este momento de
cambios necesarios para redirigir los esfuerzos y responder a una
demanda social que también ha cambiado.

Through the exhibition of the scale models of the Villa Solar
houses in the Solar Decathlon Europe competition, held for the
first time in Spain in June 2010, we would like to transmit this
message in the Spanish pavilion of the 12th Venice Architecture
Biennale. Only with efforts like the one presented in this event,
in this case associated with efficient use of solar energy, can
we transform our current model of development and find new
guidelines for architecture, which must back more intensely
the needs of the society of the future to which we are all
committed.

A través de la exposición de las maquetas de las casas de la Villa
Solar en la competición Solar Decathlon Europe, que ha tenido lugar
por primera vez en España en junio de 2010, se quiere transmitir este
mensaje en el pabellón español de la XII Bienal de Arquitectura de
Venecia. Solo con esfuerzos como el que se presenta en este evento,
en este caso relacionado con el aprovechamiento de la energía solar,
podrá transformarse el actual modelo de desarrollo, y encontrar
nuevas pautas para la arquitectura, que debe solidarizarse de manera
más intensa con las necesidades de la sociedad del futuro y con la que
estamos todos comprometidos.

La exposición que se propone en el pabellón de España se centra en los
actuales esfuerzos por encontrar el nuevo territorio de la arquitectura,
más allá de los criterios formalistas que han predominado en los últimos
tiempos, y da muestra del trabajo realizado por el colectivo de arquitectos
para redefinir los límites de la arquitectura en un mundo consciente del
valor de los recursos a su disposición.
Esta búsqueda se asienta sobre dos soportes: el conocimiento y la
experimentación, que son las herramientas con las que contamos en
la actualidad.

En cuanto al conocimiento en que deben basarse las nuevas propuestas,
que no echan en saco roto lo adquirido a lo largo de la historia de la
arquitectura, sirve de testimonio la red de bibliotecas de arquitectura que
hay en España, por ejemplo:

¿QUÉ ES SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE?
Solar Decathlon Europe es una competición internacional en la que universidades de todo el mundo
pugnan por construir la casa más eficiente desde el punto de vista energético alimentándose sólo por
energía solar. La primera edición europea de este prestigioso concurso se ha celebrado en Madrid
entre el 17 y el 27 de junio de este año y ha sido organizada por el Ministerio de Vivienda. En
este primera edición europea (las cuatro anteriores se han desarrollado en Estados Unidos) han
participado 17 universidades de siete países y tres continentes, lo que la ha convertido en la más
internacional de todas las que se han celebrado hasta ahora. La próxima edición de la competición
será también en Madrid, en 2012.
WHAT IS SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE?
Solar Decathlon Europe is an international competition in which universities from all over
the world compete to build the most energy-efficient house supplied by solar energy only.
The first European edition of this prestigious competition was held in Madrid between the
17th and 27th of June of this year and was organised by the Ministry of Housing. In this
first European edition (the previous four were held in the United States) 17 universities
from seven countries and three continents took part, making it the most international Solar
Decathlon competition held up to now. The next edition of the competition will also be held
in Madrid in 2012 .

La experimentación, el carácter de búsquedas que se precisa en la
actualidad, se representa en la muestra de la mano de Solar Decathlon
Europe. La exposición lleva a Venecia las maquetas de los proyectos
que participaron en esta competición internacional en Madrid el
pasado mes de junio. El objetivo no es otro que transmitir que solo
con esfuerzos colectivos como el que se presenta en esta ocasión,
en este caso relacionado con el aprovechamiento de la energía solar,
pueden transformarse las actuales pautas en aras de una arquitectura
que responda a las nuevas necesidades de los ciudadanos.
Sala central: reúne las maquetas de los 12 proyectos presentados por
Universidades extranjeras. En él se proyecta, además, un vídeo que
resume cómo se desarrolló la competición en Madrid. La sala reúne
también otras proyecciones con imágenes de los citados 45 centros del
conocimiento de la arquitectura y el urbanismo en España.
The experimentation, the searching spirit that is currently needed, is represented
in the exhibition thanks to Solar Decathlon Europe. The exhibition takes to Venice
the scale models of the projects which took part in this international competition
in Madrid last June. The objective is none other than to transmit that only
through collective efforts like the one presented on this occasion, in this instance
associated with the use of solar energy, can we transform the current norms in
the interests of an architecture that responds to the new needs of the public.
Central Hall: brings together the scale models of the 12 projects presented by
foreign universities. In addition, a video showing a summary of how the competition
in Madrid evolved is projected. The hall also includes other projections showing
images of the above mentioned 45 architecture and town planning knowledge
centres in Spain.

En las salas laterales se pueden ver los talleres de los cinco
equipos españoles que participaron en SDE 2010, con una muestra
de maquetas y fotografías que relatan el trabajo desarrollado en
los dos últimos años, para presentar una nueva vivienda en la
competición, pero que siguen desarrollando para incorporar otras
energías alternativas, otras soluciones pasivas, otros materiales y
otras técnicas al lenguaje de la arquitectura.

In the lateral halls the workshops of the five Spanish teams that
participated in SDE 2010 are on display, alongside an exhibition of
scale models and photographs which recount the work carried out
in the past two years to present a new house in the competition, but
which they continue to carry out in order to incorporate other alternative
energies, other passive solutions, other materials and other techniques
to the language of architecture.

La arquitectura siempre construye parlamentos.
Su verdadero material no es el final feliz de
los renders soleados, sino la duda, la disputa
pública de aquello que crea diferencias y
el tanteo lento, experimental y reiterado;
socialmente debatido, confrontado y celebrado.
Para mí, arquitectura es la sociedad que
disputa con fruición.

Architecture always builds parley. Its true material is
not the happy ending of the sunlit render but the doubt-
ing, the public dispute on anything that creates dif-
ferences and a slow, experimental, reiterated weighing
up; socially debated, confronted and celebrated. For me,
architecture is the society that relishes a dispute.

Mas allá de la construcción de hermosos objetos, la arquitectura ahora
debe redibujar el tejido urbano y definir el territorio. La Arquitectura
puede dar respuesta precisa a las necesidades que impone la situación
social y debe valerse de su capacidad de ordenación para articular la
relación entre espacio urbano y paisaje.

Beyond building beautiful objects, architecture must now redraw the urban fabric and define the
territory. Architecture must provide a precise response to the needs imposed by the social situation
and must make use of its capacity for development to articulate the relationship between urban space
and landscape.

Reinventarse, dejar de especular, luchar por los derechos
que como ciudadanos tenemos a una vivienda digna, a
una ciudad positiva, a un paisaje sano. Buscar el equilibrio
entre la ética y la estética, entre el deseo y la necesidad.
Para eso nos entrenamos y para eso la sociedad confía
en nosotros la construcción de sus ciudades. En este
momento de cambio, no podemos desaprovechar la
oportunidad.

Reinventing oneself, ceasing to speculate, fighting for the right that we citizens
have to decent housing, to a positive city, to a healthy landscape. Seeking a
balance between ethics and aesthetics, between desire and need. It is for this
that we train and for this that society entrusts us with the construction of its
cities. At this time of change, we cannot squander the opportunity.

En el mundo cambiante de hoy, arquitectos,
ingenieros, geógrafos y sociólogos, están trabajando
en soluciones sensibles para el diseño de
arquitectura, el desarrollo urbano, la preservación
del paisaje y el territorio. Combinar creatividad,
conocimiento científico, innovación técnica y social y
especialmente un fuerte sentido de responsabilidad
será el único posicionamiento posible.

In today’s changing world, architects, engineers, geographers and sociologists
are working on sensitive solutions for the design of architecture, urban
development, the preservation of the landscape and the territory. Combining
creativity, scientific knowledge, technical and social innovation and especially a
powerful sense of responsibility will be the only possible approach.

Después de esta crisis económica, en la arquitectura, parece que
empezamos a dudar sobre la necesidad de seguir construyendo
o que tal vez debemos construir de manera diferente. Oímos:
arquitectura social, sostenible, eco-arquitectura, arquitectura
inteligente, tolerante, la arquitectura accesible ... Creo que hay
muchos términos nuevos, demasiados para hablar en realidad
sobre necesidades que están ahí desde siempre.
La crisis no tiene porque impedir de seguir haciendo buenos
proyectos de arquitectura. Recuerdo al mismo Gaudí afirmando
que la arquitectura es mucho más elegante cuando tiene pocos
medios. Tal vez todos deberíamos ser más profundos y
honestos y admitir que estamos en una etapa diferente
cuando tenemos que dejar de añadir objetos y en su lugar

tratar de hacerlo mejor, dando más tiempo e investigación
para cada fase del proyecto con el fin de que este sea lo
más adecuado posible, descubrir las mejores soluciones
para los problemas que se nos plantean, intentar que sea
único e innovador y sobretodo responder a las necesidades
reales. Por supuesto, es una cuestión más global, no depende
sólo de arquitectos, sino también de las políticas económicas
y urbanas. Sin embargo, los arquitectos podrían reunir los
profesionales y los conocimientos de otros campos a fin de
determinar lo que necesita la ciudad, lo que la gente necesita
de su barrio, de lugar de trabajo, del lugar de ocio o de sus
apartamentos, ser atento a lo que es el estilo de vida actual.

After this economic crisis has occured, in architecture, it seems
we have eventually began to doubt about the need to keep on
building or maybe we have began to think that we should build
differently. We hear: social, sustainable, eco- architecture,
intelligent architecture, tolerant, accessible architecture… I
think there are lot of new terms, too many to talk actually
about simple needs that are there since ever.
There is no reason to think that the economic crisis will not
allow us to design good projects of architecture. I remind
Gaudí himself stating that architecture is much more elegant
when it has got few economic means. Maybe we all should be
more profound and honest and admit it is a different stage

when we have to stop adding objects and instead just try
to make it better, giving more time and investigation to
every step of a project in order to make it as perfect as
it can be, find out the best solutions, make it unique and
innovative, really answer to real needs. It is of course a
more global question, it does not depend just on architects
but also on the economic and urban policies. Still, architects
could gather professionals and knowledge from other fields
in order to determine what a city needs, what people need
from their neighborhood, workplace, leisure place or from their
flats, what is the actual lifestyle.

de nuestro trabajo nos ha traído un escenario al que debemos
adaptarnos con criterios de sostenibilidad, organización social y

interdisciplinares, nos ayudarán a definir desde la arquitectura este
nuevo escenario.

I live with optimism and hope a present situation that in the field of our work has taken us to
a scenario requiring us to adapt according to criteria of sustainability, social organisation and
connection with our surroundings. Through more open, flexible and interdisciplinary studies, it will
help us to define this new scenario through architecture.

Si entendemos la arquitectura como espacio de lo sociable,
inmediatamente la responsabilidad que conlleva se multiplica,
y su perfil, a la vez que se delimita, se enriquece.
La arquitectura que no está dirigida a la creación de una
mejor convivencia en sus múltiples vertientes – mitos, ritos,
cotidianidad… – no puede ser considerada buena arquitectura.
Ni siquiera arquitectura.

If we understand architecture as a space for sociability, the responsibility
this entails is immediately multiplied and its profile, while delimiting it, is
enriched.
Architecture not aimed at creating a better quality of coexistence in its multiple
facets – myths, rites, the quotidian… – cannot be viewed as good architecture.
Not even as architecture.

Aprovechando la actual situación de crisis, sería bueno dejar a un
lado tanta tontería y apostar por una arquitectura más pragmática,
más libre, más viva y a la vez más racional. Más respetuosa con el
entorno y más afectuosa con sus usuarios; una arquitectura menos
dogmática y menos represiva que responda no sólo a parámetros
métricos y económicos y preste más atención a la luz, al color, a las
vistas y a los sentidos; una arquitectura más lúcida, más autosuficiente
y más autosostenible, enraizada en el pasado, abierta a todas las
posibilidades del presente y capaz de otear lucidamente el futuro;
hecha con plena participación de sus usuarios y fiel reflejo de su
situación social, mental y emocional, pensada más en el usufructo
colectivo que en la propiedad privada;

construida con materiales sencillos pero sólidos,de fácil mantenimiento,
resultado de procesos lógicos y no de praxis especulativas; una
arquitectura que no busque el espectáculo por el espectáculo, sino
que este sea consecuencia del acierto de sus proporciones, de su
riqueza espacial, del equilibrio entre escala humana y territorial ,
de la sintonía entre lenguaje formal y constructivo, de su capacidad
para generar ciudad o de integrarse y colaborar en la construcción
y no en la destrucción del territorio; una arquitectura mejor, por la
utilidad, la confortabilidad, la dignidad y la belleza que ofrece a los
usuarios o a los que, sin serlo, la contemplan.
No es poco, pero para eso estamos, o deberíamos de estar, los
arquitectos.

The current crisis provides us with an opportunity to overcome
so much that is foolish and commit ourselves firmly to an
architecture that is more pragmatic, freer, more life-enhancing
and at the same time more rational. Architecture should be
more respectful of the environment and more sympathetic to
its users; less dogmatic and less repressive, concerned not only
with metric and economic parameters, but more aware of light,
colour, vistas and the senses; more lucid, more self-sufficient and
more self-sustainable and, though rooted in the past, open to
all the possibilities of the present and capable of scanning what
the future has to offer; created with the full participation of
its users as a true reflection of their social, psychological and
emotional circumstances, hence concerned more with collective
use than private property;

constructed using simple but solid materials that are easy to maintain
and the result of the process of logic rather than the praxis of speculation;
not aiming for spectacle for spectacle’s sake, but a product of skilful
proportions and spatial richness, a balance between the human and
local scale, a harmony between formal and constructive language, with a
capacity to generate towns cities and act as partner and collaborator in
the construction rather than the destruction of the local area; in short, a
better architecture in terms of the utility, comfort, dignity and beauty it can
offer its users, or those who while not using it, are its viewers.
It may be quite a lot to ask, but that’s what we are for - or should be - as
architects.

Nos interesan las propuestas que atienden y expresan su interacción con
las personas, el clima, el paso del tiempo, el lugar donde se plantean.
Propuestas que se adapten a las circunstancias buscando un equilibrio entre
lo existente y lo posible, y quizás, teniendo la amabilidad de pasar casi
desapercibidas.

We are interested in proposals that attend to and express their interaction with people, the
climate, the passage of time, the place where they arise. Proposals that adapt to circumstances,
seeking equilibrium between the existing and the possible, and perhaps having the kindness of
going almost unnoticed.

La arquitectura siempre será necesaria. Y la belleza también. Esto nos
obliga a ser optimistas y a entender cada problema, cada vicisitud, como
una magnífica oportunidad para hacer arquitectura, para dar incluso más
de lo que la sociedad nos demanda. Quizás ahora lo que deberíamos hacer
es intentar analizar mejor esa realidad que nos rodea, mirarla con más
atención y descubrir en ella esas oportunidades.

Architecture will always be necessary. And so will beauty. This requires us to be optimistic and to
understand each problem, each vicissitude, as a magnificent opportunity to make architecture, to
give even more than society demands of us. Perhaps what we should do now is to try to better
analyse this reality that surrounds us, to look at it with greater attention and to discover these
opportunities in it.

Del lado de la entropía.
Identificamos proyectar, en general, con crear cuerpos nuevos,
con dar forma y configurar a partir de elementos, materiales
menudos, para luego organizar entidades articuladas, estruc-
turadas, mayores. Hoy, en gran medida, hemos de traba-

intervención humana. El medio ambiente es artificial.
La tarea de organizar pasa a ser la tarea de transformar
cuerpos ya formados. La construcción es, además de
constructiva, “destructiva” y más que un proceso de
formación es un proceso de metamorfosis. Se trata
de un trabajo no ya del lado de lo que en cibernética
se denomina organización o edificación de la comple-
jidad, sino de un trabajo del lado de la entropía.
La primera actitud contempla el tránsito de partes al todo. La
segunda, de un todo a otro todo. En este caso las operaciones

son las de transformar, seguir el curso de una metamorfosis
donde el objeto nuevo y sus partes se determinan desde un
todo previo. La divergencia en tales modalidades de acción
puede esclarecerse si analizamos la diferencia entre modelar
y tallar en los procesos tradicionales de la escultura. Modelar
es ir de elementos menudos, partes pequeñas, a totalidades
mayores. Es un proceso acumulativo y aditivo. Tallar es ir de
un todo a otro todo deducido del primero. Supone un proceso
sustractivo.
Otra modalidad de transformación es no hacer, se trata de al-
terar el contexto imaginario que viene asociado a algo ya ex-
istente: es la estrategia Ready-made. La entidad localizada,
“elegida”, es desplazada a un hábitat diverso. Nuevos pensami-
entos se adhieren a ella. Al situar o interpretar algo encontrado
en un contexto extraño al que constituye su marco habitual se
alteran sus connotaciones semánticas.

On the side of entropy.
In general, we identify designing with creating new bodies, with
giving shape and configuring through elements, small materials,
to then organise articulated, structured, greater entities. Today,
to a large extent, we have to work on what is already
built. The earth is mostly no longer virgin and has
been deeply altered through human intervention.
The environment is artificial. The task of organising
becomes the task of transforming previously-formed
bodies. Construction is, as well as constructive,
“destructive”, a process of metamorphosis rather
than a forming process. This is a task that is not so
much on the side of what in cybernetics we term the
organisation or construction of complexity, but a task
on the side of entropy.
The former attitude contemplates the transfer of parts to the
whole; the latter, from a whole to another whole. In this case

the operations are those of transforming, following the course
of a metamorphosis where the new object and its parts are
determined through a prior whole. Divergence in such modalities
of action may be elucidated if we analyse the difference between
modelling and carving in traditional processes of sculpture.
To model is to go from tiny elements, small parts, to greater
totalities. It is an accumulative and additive process. To carve is
to go from a whole to another whole deducted from the first one.
It represents a subtractive process.
Another transformation modality is that of not doing; it is a
question of altering the imaginary context that comes associated
to something already in existence: it is the Ready-made
strategy. The localised, “chosen” entity is shifted to a diverse
habitat. New thoughts adhere to it. By situating or interpreting
something found in a context foreign to the one constituting its
habitual framework, its semantic connotations are altered.

Hoy sospechamos que nada será de nuevo como antes, que
la arquitectura tiene que aceptar el reto de incorporar nuevas
variables, inquietudes y saberes, pero también de ofrecer
conocimiento útil a las otras disciplinas para recuperar un lugar

arquitectura, por tanto ella sola no garantiza su calidad.
La crisis evidencia lo irracional de la arquitectura del
despilfarro y nos induce hacia lo razonable. La necesidad
y luego el propio arte, ayudarán a fortalecer una necesaria
conciencia solidaria.

Sustainability is an ethical and critical attitude that must precede architecture;
only this will then ensure its quality. The recession proves the irrationality of a
wasteful architecture and induces a reasonable attitude. Need and then art itself
will help to strengthen a necessarily supportive awareness.

 Trying to analyze the contemporary crisis concerning man
and his natural setting we discover that a large amount of
measures taken in the past have not solved the problems
on the contrary they have been magnified or new ones have
appeared.
DDT was discover in 1939 and his discoverer got a Nobel
Price, which a decade after the world was becoming addicted
to a dangerous item of high toxicity.
We understand that the ecological health of our urban
civilization it is to have an abstract and flexible idea as a guide
for the changing conditions of our World.

Si tratásemos de analizar la crisis contemporánea en la
vertiente del hombre y su medio natural descubriríamos que
una parte de las medidas aplicadas en el pasado no han
corregido los problemas que causaban sino mas bien los han
magnificado o aparecido otros nuevos.
El DDT descubierto en 1939 y galardonado su descubridor con
el Premio Nobel, una década después el mundo se convertiría
en adicto a éste producto peligroso por su alta toxicidad.
Entendemos que la salud ecológica en nuestra civilización
urbana consiste más bien en tener una idea abstracta flexible
que pueda servir de guía en los cambios relacionados con las
condiciones del mundo en el que vivimos.
