German Immigrants

may German immigrants were secure economically, they had jobs and
trades. They came because revolutions had failed. One third of the Germans
were Catholic, majority of them Protestant. There were also a small group of
jews and atheist. Germans brought Quaker Oats, pianos, and levis.

The Chinese immigrants came to California because of the gold rush. The
stayed three to five years. Many of them were in building railroads.

Nativism

Focuses on religion and Catholicism. The know nothing part rises in 1854.
They form a secret organization, they are so secret that when people ask
about the party, they were told to say that they know nothing. It falls when
slavery becomes the big issue.

Early Labor Unions

There was a prosecution as unlawful conspiracies. Unions can demand that


the only have a union member. The equal rights comes out of this movement
and they want labor reform.

John J Astor

The myth is the rags to riches is common to America. Stratification actually


increases. John Jacob Astor made Twelve million from the fur trade. America
is rapidly modernizing but many people are left behind.
