Anglo Irish Writing

-Indicative features
Anglo Irish writing by writers who identify themselves as Irish, but
who write in the English language.

• Pros writing in N. Ireland developed rather slowly.

• It was a time of sharp social and economic divisions and

pieces normally take on stand point.

• Rural areas of Ireland are often seen as retarded.

• Ever present, to a greater or less degree are the tensions

between republicans and unionism. These have often found
literary outlet.

• However, these hostilities are never simplified.

• Some writers deal with what it means to be caught right in

the middle of this conflict.

• One of the most important aspects of Anglo Irish writing is

its intensely local and intimate situations, often revolving
around simple family, village matters.

• N. Ireland is a land of contradiction: writers can either see it

as a land of mythology and magic and folklore and mystical
ness or as a land of strict religious upbringing and demanding
gritty realism.
• Protestant writing does tend to differ from catholic. It does
tend to be more tolerant and protestant writing more bigoted
and intolerant. However, occasionally catholic venom can be
just as biting towards Protestantism as vice- versa.

• Despite all aforementioned Anglo Irish writing is highly

individualised and full of variety.
