• Hassal (1996) states that “a person described as copmpetent in an


occupation or proffession is considered to have a repository of
skills,knowledge and undestanding which he or she can apply in a range of
contexts and organisations “.
• Lusia Lepsinger (1999) define Competency as:
(a role or responsibility) that correlates with performance on the job, can
be measured against well accepted standards , and that can be improved
via training & devlopment”.
FACTORS NEED TO BE FULLY INTEGRATED WITHIN
AN ORGANISATION BEFORE COMPETENCY –BASED
PAY CAN BE INTRODUCED

• An employee appraisal process must already exist.


• Managers must already have been trained to assess competencies.
• Employees should be made aware of the compitencies required and how to
demonstrate them when it comes to their appraisals.
• All employees are fully competent.
