KATA PENGANTAR
Beberapa waktu silam media massa melaporkan bahwa sistem pendidikan
nasional kita terbukti paling jelek di Asia dan Pasifik, bahkan berada
di bawah Vietnam. Sementara itu, universitas-universitas yang katanya
terhebat di Indonesia menduduki peringkat yang tidak membanggakan bila
dibandingkan dengan universitas sejenis di kawasan Asia. Kedua fenomena
di atas menunjukkan bahwa sumber daya manusia Indonesia kurang cerdas,
kritis, dan kurang kompetitif.
Namun yang lebih menyedihkan adalah dunia pendidikan kita belumlah
mencurahkan perhatian yang signifikan untuk menjawab tantangan di atas.
Keterampilan berpikir kritis, sebagai kemampuan kognitif yang harus
dikuasai untuk ikut andil dalam persaingan global, belum dimasukkan
dalam kurikulum pendidikan. Pengajaran bahasa, misalnya, sebagai
pengajaran alat berpikir kritis masih menitikberatkan pada penguasaan
materi melalui hapalan (rote learning).
Mencermati kondisi di atas, penulis merasa tertantang untuk mencoba
mengembangkan konsep yang pernah dieksperimentasikan dosen perkuliahan
membaca di Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UPI berupa pemanduan
keterampilan berpikir kritis atau cognitive coaching. Penulis berupaya
untuk memetakan konsep cognitive coaching dalam pengajaran MKDU bahasa
Inggris di perguruan tinggi.
Melalui cognitive coaching ini, diharapkan keterampilan berpikir kritis
dapat diintegrasikan dengan pengajaran MKDU bahasa Inggris di PT
sehingga mahasiswa tidak hanya mampu menguasai pelbagai kaidah bahasa
dan menerapkannya dalam komunikasi melainkan juga mampu mengasah
kompetensi kognitif (berpikir) secara optimal.
Penulis memulai mengkaji hasil penelitian Musthafa (2000) ihwal uji
eksperimentasi cognitive coaching dalam peningkatan berpikir kritis
mahasiswa yang mengontrak mata kuliah Extensive Reading 1. Kemudian
penulis mencoba menelusuri dunia internet untuk mencari konsep, data,
dan informasi yang
mendukung metode cognitive coaching tadi. Alhasil, usailah penyusunan karya
tulis ini.
Dalam proses penyelesaian karya tulis ini, penulis ingin mengucapkan terima
kasih yang sebesar-besarnya kepada:
1. Dr. Bachrudin Mushtafa, M.A., selaku Ketua Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa
Inggris UPI, yang telah membuka cakrawala penulis mengenai konsep yang
disajikan dalam karya tulis ini.
2. Drs. Wachyu Sundayana, M.A., selaku Sekretaris Jurusan Pendidikan
Bahasa Inggris UPI, yang telah memfasilitasi penulis dalam penyelesaian
karya tulis ini.
3. Kedua orang tua yang tercinta yang senantiasa memanjatkan do’a demi
keberhasilan setiap aktivitas yang penulis lakukan.
4. Seluruh mahasiswa bahasa Inggris UPI dan warga ASPA I Sangkuriang
yang telah memberikan dorongan baik berupa materi maupun non-materi
kepada penulis.
Akhirul Kalam, penulis sadar bahwa karya tulis ini masih belum layak
dikatakan
sempurna sehingga saran dan kritik konstruktif akan senantiasa
diharapkan demi perbaikan dan peningkatan penyusunan karya tulis lainnya
di masa mendatang. Semoga karya tulis ini mampu memberikan kontribusi
signifikan bagi pengembangan pengajaran MKDU bahasa Inggris dan
pengajaran keterampilan berpikir kritis di perguruan tinggi.

ABSTRACT
Previous research has blatantly shown us that critical thinking is of
importance to be taught in Indonesian context. Also, it has revealed
that critical thinking is urgently needed to be taught in early years of
schooling and its teaching can be integrated in writing or reading
through cognitive coaching. Critical thinking is of value as our future
is greatly dependant on the quality of our thinking. It can help us sort
out dozens perceived information in this globalized world. And cognitive
coaching is one of instruction method that can enhance one’s
intellectual power by providing personal insights into one’s own
thinking; build flexible, confident problem solving; and encourages
self-efficacy and pride. Another point is that cognitive coaching can
foster independence in learning.
The focal point of this paper is Developing Critical Thinking Skills in
Higher
Education through Cognitive Coaching (The Latest Approach to Teaching
English
for non-English Students and Critical Thinking Instruction in Higher
Education).
The issue is raised since the writer observed the phenomena of English
instruction for non-English students in higher education, which tends to
simply focus on specialized students’ course. Meanwhile, the method of
its instruction has not got sufficient attention especially in enhancing
students’ critical thinking. Therefore, this study is undertaken to
explore ways to develop a method of instructing critical thinking
through cognitive coaching in teaching English subject for non- English
students in higher education.
The result of the present study yields two main points: 1) Critical
thinking is of importance for all students to encounter globalized
world, and 2) Cognitive coaching can be systematically integrated in
teaching English for non-English students in higher education to enhance
their critical thinking.
