She could hear it, too. The beat rushing in her ears. Shoomp, shoomp, shoomp.

14 She stared at Papa, not wanting to say a word. Not wanting to lose the sound. Not

wanting to forget the feel of the heart of the valley.

She pressed closer to the ground, until her body was breathing with the earth’s.

And with Papa’s. The three hearts beating together.

16 She smiled at Papa, not needing to talk, her eyes saying everything.

17 And his smile answered hers. Telling her that he knew she had felt it.

Introduction

It was a gorgeous day and I was just heading out from school, my latest creative writing assignment
clutched in my hand. The sun shone brightly, and the leaves glow on the trees. I took in a deep breath
and felt the cool breeze caress my face. Remembering my assignment, I took a quick glance at the pages
as I walked along. The question was emblazoned at the top of the page, font bolded and underlined. I
read the directions aloud. ‘You are to write an essay on the following topic - __________. It will be due a
week from today. You will be graded on the amount of insight shown. Choose your words wisely.’ I
stared at the paper, willing the words on it to inspire me. It didn’t. Feeling disappointed, I folded the
papers and put them in my pocket as I turned the corner to head down the street / to meet
___________________.Just at this moment, a……………

Conclusion:

All of the sudden, I stood silent for moment, absorbing what had just unfolded in front of me. My face
glow, suffused with an inner light. I nearly skipped all the way home, feeling the creative juices flowing
inside me. I flew up the stairs, unlocked the door and sat at my computer. I set my fingers on the
keyboard, feeling the words welling up inside me, waiting to burst out. I took a quick glance at my
notepad and began to type, exuberance bubbling inside me.

__Entering the world of writing should be exciting and fulfilling. To wield the power of words, making imagination and
thoughts concrete, is an empowering experience. And how satisfying to know that once a story is written, the words
on the page are there to be re-visited and enjoyed as many times as you want.
All these positive experiences that clarify thought and build self-awareness can come from the act of writing. Yet for
some children the entry into the world of writing is a difficult process fraught with anxiety.
