Are Indian Politicians the new

hooligans?

Indian Politics and crime have always gone hand in hand. India is one
of the most corrupt countries in the world owing to its high number of
politicians with criminal backgrounds.

According to a blog in Totalpolitics.com, 1 in every 5 members in the

last parliament had criminal cases lodged against them! Also, The
Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), analyzing the affidavits of
7,405 candidates contesting in 2009, had found that 1,114 faced
criminal charges.

What is shocking is the fact that these are not petty crimes like
parking fines; they are serious- murder, extortion, kidnapping and
extortion.

In the candidate criminal record chart (Elections 2009), 499 have

charges related to ‘heinous’ crimes - Congress and the BSP have 43
candidates each, closely followed by the BJP with 41.

Can such facts be ignored?

Yes, definitely they can and are being ignored in our country. The
same trend has been going on throughout the history of Indian politics
and change is highly unlikely. The root cause for all this is
definitely – Corruption. This very process adds to the ignorance. The
politicians have the Law & Order in their pockets and they manipulate
the laws keeping their benefits in mind.

Today, such politicians have considered them above all authority

figures and turned obsessed hooligans.

For instance, in the recent parliamentary session where the Women’s

Reservation Bill was being passed members of the Samajwadi Party by
the names Kamal Akhtar, Nand Kishore Yadav, Veerpal Singh Yadav and
Amir Alam Khan had tried to attack the Vice-President of India and
Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Hamid Ansari as a sign of opposition to
the passing of the Women’s Reservation Bill.

All of them were immediately suspended from the house. But soon, Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh declared that if they would apologize to Mr.
Hamid Ansari, than their suspensions would be revoked. How do you
expect any improvement if there is such leniency shown by the Prime
Minister of the country himself?

The members deserved to be behind bars but they are being given a
chance at redemption for a daylight crime!

That is the unchanged ugly truth of politics in India today.
