Ford Figo is a newly launched car in the reasonable price range of 3.5 lakh onwards, with basic features
particularly suited to the Indian road and traffic conditions. It gets its name from the colloquial Italian
expression Figo which is similar to colloquial English expression ‘cool’.
The car offers third generation safety features like Antilock Brake System, Dual Front Airbags for safety
in case of head-on collisions and Electronic Brake Force Distribution for comfortable driving and
enhanced stability. Seatbelt warning indicator and door warning features are also inbuilt.
It lacks some advanced features like alloy wheels, rear power windows, automatic climate control, rear
defogger, rear wiper, sun roof and fog lamp.
The diesel variant is made up of 1.4L,1299 cc diesel engine and offers excellent fuel economy. Mileage of
15kmpl in city and 18.5 kmpl on highways.
A unique feature known as “Distance to Empty” informs you how many kms you can go with the
remaining fuel in the tank.
Power
Ford Figo is available with both petrol and diesel engine options that provide different levels of power
and performance. The petrol variant has been equipped with 1.2L, 1196cc, SEFI petrol engine with five
speed manual transmission. The 1.2 litre petrol engine of Ford Figo produces 71(52.4) at 6250 rpm and
pumps out 102 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm.
A 1.4 L, 1399 cc Duratorq diesel engine has been provided in the diesel variant that delivers 69 PS of
maximum power at 4,000 rpm and produces a top torque of 160 Nm at 2,000 rpm which ensures
smooth driving experience and impressive performance.

Driving experience:
The car has been a pleasure to drive so far. There has been almost no Turbo lag compared to all cars running on the Fiat’s MJD engines. I have
driven 1400+ kms so far on highways, in cities (Pune and Mumbai) and some strenuous ghat sections. The engine response is superb.
Pros (apart from the ones mentioned by other members before):
1) After driving on the expressway with a top speed of 140 kpmh, I found the car to be extremely stable, like a sedan. Even without ABS, the car
brakes well, the 4th and 5th gear pickup is also good.
2) Good build quality (I will tell you why: Yesterday an Indica bumped into my Figo from behind in Pune traffic, I was surprised to see there was
not even a scratch on the rear bumper, reason: the bumper is extremely flexible and bends inwards if pressed by hand lightly and hence could
absorb a jerk like that!)
3) If you buy a top end variant of this car, you do not need to take this car to any after-market products’ shop for accessorizing it. It’s on road
price is really on road price apart from the standard sun films, polishing, waxing and mats.
4) The sound system is very good. Bluetooth works flawlessly well. (Ford has grown by leaps and bounds in the infotainment area recently)
5) The area covered by the headlights is good and does not need at upgrade of headlamps as of now.
1) The quality of the Fuel cap lock is not upto the mark. Ford has used plastic there and I have my doubts on the longevity of the lock.
2) The ICE that comes with Figo does not have an USB drive plug point, though the system is enabled with an USB drive reading circuit. Question
is if it costs just Rs 1,100 as an accessory, might as well include it with the package. USB is now almost a standard feature in car audio systems.
3) There is scope for improvement on the interiors of the Figo. With the use of blue LED in the dashboard (ref: the new i20) gaining presence in
the Indian market, the Figo owners will feel a little left out.
4) From my experience so far, if you want to focus on getting optimum FE from Figo, you need to be really skilled in driving your Figo to extract
the best FE. The right gear ratios, speed, etc. which is a little difficult in the city traffic.
5) The reverse gear is not as powerful as the first gear which is normally the case in most cars. Engine stalls in most cases if not used properly.
Fuel Efficiency:
I have driven the Figo on highways, expressways, ghats, cities and bad roads. My driving style is, you could say a little spirited. With 50-50
highway-city combo and two cycles of tank full to tank full method of FE calculations later, I have got FE of 17.3 kmpl in the first cycle and 16.5
kmpl in the second cycle.
I was pretty happy at this considering the reviews on T-BHP of Figo regarding FE were disappointing.
Below is how I (try) to drive my car and AFAIK is the reason to get this kind of FE:
0-15 kmph – 1st gear
15-40 kmph – 2nd gear
40-60 kmph – 3rd gear
60-90 kmph – 4th gear
90-140 kmph – 5th gear
I try not to let the tacho cross 3000 rpms. Also, avoid running the car without the turbo kicked in (keep your engine above 1500 rpm).
Maintain a pressure of 32 psi in all four tyres.
Keeping my fingers crossed for better FE after the first service!
Issues cropping up so far in my car:
1) The rear left window rolls down (a little bit) voluntarily after consistent high speed driving.
2) The rear left speaker responds badly to higher levels of bass output.
3) Front right power window shrieks while open-close function, needs lubrication I guess.
Will keep posting new experiences of my relationship with my Figo as and when it happens.
First glance reveals a rather familiar design for the Figo - and if you think you've seen it before, blame it on the C-Max. Yes, the
car has a face that is extremely similar to the large hatchback that Ford unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show and sports the Blue
Oval's distinct design personality. All the way from the uniquely shaped headlights down to the front grille, the face is the
representation of new Ford models throughout their product portfolio. In many ways in fact, it even harks back in visual similarity
to the Ford Ikon as well.
The overall design is rather chunky and muscular with neat accents and details all around. The flared wheel arches and the kink
running between them front to back ad a strong sense of character. The rear is rather pretty too with the vertically stacked tail
lamps and shapely rear window. All in all, the Figo isn't an overly radical design - it is in keeping with large hatches available from
other manufacturers in the country - which is a good thing. The Indian populace should find ready acceptance to the design.
Interiors seem fresh as well from the little that the released images show.
The design of the dash itself is nothing new, being very similar to that of the Fiesta. The plastic quality is
acceptable, not great, and there are some issues with finishing. There are some pretty visible gaps in the steering
wheel and the door handles are pretty flimsy. The music system on the higher end variants is well integrated but
again looks tacky, and the feel of the buttons isn’t really rich. So at this point one might ask if there is anything
really good about the interiors?
The answer is: YES! – Space! And boy is there a lot of it. The Figo gave the impression of being a pretty big car
when viewed from the outside, and this has carried over to the inside. The people who benefit most from this are
the rear passengers, who get an enormous amount of legroom, along with decent headroom; although the rear
headrests are useless for anyone more than five feet tall. The seats are rather upright, and a touch firm, but will be
a boon on longer rides. So even if rear passengers feel like they’ve been immersed in a sea of grey they certainly
won’t feel claustrophobic. Rear window opening is limited at 50%, which means your rear windows won’t come
down more than halfway.
The driver will be a happy man, with the high driver’s seat giving him a commanding view of the road. All the stalks
and buttons are at hand, the view from the ORVM’s is good and the dials are easy to read.
The cramped foot-well and the absence of a dead pedal spoil the party. The seat fabrics feel a bit abrasive and
aren’t great quality. Coming to storage, the front passengers get door pockets, but storage at the rear is non-
existent, no door pockets to speak of. The glovebox is pretty small and narrow and poorly finished with visible
creases in the plastic. Rear visibility is good and reversing shouldn’t be a problem. All in all the interiors may lack in
quality, but they more than make up in the sheer amount of space.
The handling is easily the best feature with the Figo. Based on an older Fiesta platform, this car can move in style!
Absolute control over where it treads, everything about the way the Figo handles inspires confidence. Very
impressive stuff from Ford, handling continues to remain the hallmark of Fords in India.
enough ground clearence to avoid heay bumps, suspention is superb sitting inside the car u hardly notice any patches on the
road, excellent grip while sharp curves, very stable and will react to you on high speed, swift suck and figo cool!
The stance which makes the new Figo so very athletic and handsome in its outlook while having that confident about-town
sensibility thanks to just the right amount of body toning and practical design cues rounded out by clever accents. The front end
has that familiar global Ford tri-plane look with the split line on the top of the bonnet's leading edge working harmoniously with
those dynamically stylized headlamps. The Figo seems to shroud its 2498mm wheelbase very well and given its ultra short
overhangs, notably at the rear, it is no surprise that the car looks just right in proportion as it does in its stance. Given its
wheelbase - the longest among any B-segment car in the land, the Figo's overall length is under 3.8 metres, 3795mm to be
precise, validating the visual appeal of the package.
What we liked on the petrol Figo is its mid range power and its driveability. There are times when when
you will need to downshift a gear – like during a quick overtaking.
The Ford Figo in its petrol avatar handles rather well. The suspension setup is identical to that on the
diesel that we tested, but the ride quality is slightly different due to the weight-loss on the petrol
version. ABS and EBD work well and aid the drive.
Feedback from the steering is impressive as the Ford Figo uses a hydraulic power system which is lively
compared to the electronic power systems in some other cars. During our road testing, we took the Figo
though some city roads with a bunch of speedbreakers – the Figo handled the bumps without losing
composure, and the ground clearance also helped the car glide over bad terrain. The Figo handled most
potholes easily, so nothing to worry about there. Related: Chevrolet Beat road test
As with the diesel Figo, the petrol one also does corner well. Braking is impressive and sharp. At times
one gets a feeling if the car has an all-disc setup (it has drums are the rear). Related: Volkswagen Polo
road test
Ford claims a 0-100kmph acceleration of 15.5 seconds. During our test, we achieved that in 16 seconds.
We have spoken a lot about the Figo in the review of its diesel variant – and all of that stand for the
petrol version too. The same big car feel and ride quality, that is quite like the big brother Fiesta, is very
much there in both the petrol and diesel variants. Handling is pretty sharp and this makes a very good
overall package.
Equipment level on the Ford Figo Titanium 1.2 petrol also remains the same. Airbags, ABS, Bluetooth
Stereo, Coral dashboard (black available too), electric mirrors, panic braking warning tail lights, key-less
entry and the list goes on. We missed rear power windows on the diesel Figo, and the same applies to
the petrol car too. Height adjustable seat belts, and the much needed clutch foot rest (dead pedal) were
also missed.
The mileage (fuel efficiency) figure for the Ford Figo petrol was 13.5 kmpl – not bad for a hatchback this
big.
If you ask us which of the two are better, it would be very difficult as both the engines are capable units.
The diesel engine of the Figo is fuel efficient but a tad noisy, while the petrol is smooth but isn’t as fuel-
efficient as the other.
The 284 liter boot of the Ford Figo is the largest in the segment. The Figo easily comes across as a very
value for money car, both in the petrol and diesel versions.
Ford has recently made big promises on how they have refreshed the after sales and dealer network and
we know for sure that Ford India is very serious with the Figo.
Competition for the Figo in India consist of the segment leader Maruti Suzuki Swift, its sibling Ritz ,
Hyundai i10 and new variants of the Hyundai i20 Era and Sportz, Chevrolet Beat, Volkswagen Polo and
the Tata Indica Vista.
The Figo petrol priced between Rs 3,66,886 (ex-showroom Mumbai) for the base Lxi and Rs 4,64,401 (ex
showroom Mumbai) for the fully loaded Titanium that we drove. The Ford Figo surely does make a very
good Value for money hatch.
Now only if Ford is listening in, we would love to see the 1.6 Petrol engine that powers the Fiesta S to be
plunked in the Figo to suffice the needs of die hard petrol heads.

It’s not often that a budget hatchback causes a stir in the CAR offices, but the Figo
managed to do just that. Having sampled some budget offerings from India and China with
decidedly iffy build quality and handling characteristics, it was a relief to see that the Figo
has managed to retain the nimble handling and supple ride of the previous Fiesta upon
which it is based, while feeling solidly put together. But it’s the level of specification
available at this price point that had a number of us checking, and then doublechecking,
the sticker price and equipment check-list.
When looking at the Figo’s logical rival, the R109 900 VW Polo Vivo Hatch 1,4, there’s
simply no comparison in terms of standard kit. Needless to say, if the classy Polo Vivo
can’t match it, the Figo has managed to emulate many of the previously segment-
dominating VW Citi’s virtues.
Given its combination of generous specification, good build quality and entertaining
dynamics in a package that is both familiar and popular with folks here in South Africa, the
Figo represents seriously good value for money. If Ford can keep the pricing stable, the
Figo may well be the first choice in this segment.

The Swift’s 1.3 petrol engine was a joy to drive with its rev-happy nature, but wasn’t best suited for the stop
start city traffic with its rather peakish power delivery. The new 1.2 K-series engine in the car has more grunt
at the bottom end, making it more convenient to be driven in the city, but doesn’t quite like to be pushed too
hard. The fuel efficiency has improved a bit and so have the emissions but the car has lost a bit of its enthusiast
appeal. Mind you, it still has the best in class power for the petrol variant, but the revvy 1.3 was a different
experience altogether.
Fret not though; the diesel variant of the Swift is at your service if you wish to enthral yourself. With an
addictive power surge from as low as 1200 rpm, the Swift DDiS is simply a delight to drive. The smooth and
punchy engine is the best that there is in the small car segment and with its amazing fuel efficiency, has made
its place in the hearts of enthusiasts and economy conscious alike. The engine options on the Swift are
definitely one of the best, and address the segment brilliantly.
The Polo is a totally new entrant in the arena and comes with two engine options. A 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.4-
litre turbo diesel (to be available from May). The petrol powered Polo produces 75 horses, 10 less than the
Swift’s 85, but doesn’t lack power. It pulls reassuringly from the bottom till 4000 rpm, after which the engine,
once shown the highway tends to show its limitations. The three pot engine makes a lot of noise and isn’t quite
as refined as its 4-pot rivals. It’s fairly punchy though, and is complemented well by a 5-speed short throw stick
that slots in a rather slick fashion. The ratios are well-sorted and the appreciable low end grunt of the engine
along with nicely spaced ratios allows crawling speeds in third gear. Overall, an average package – nothing that
should excite you.
The petrol Figo is powered by a new 1.2 litre engine specifically designed for India. It puts out a modest 71bhp
@ 6250 rpm and 102Nm @ 4000rpm. Though the power output might seem low on paper as compared to 1.2
litre mills from Maruti-Suzuki, it doesn’t feel sluggish on the move. Even though outright performance may not
be as good, the drivability is certainly as good as the other engines in the segment. The gear ratios are slightly
on the taller side to improve the fuel efficiency. It starts pulling satisfactorily past the 2000 rpm mark. But the
real power is delivered at the top end, past 4000 rpm, upto the 6500 rpm rev limit.
The other engine option is the 1.4 litre Duratorq diesel, which has been doing duty on the Fiesta, Fusion and
Ikon. With 68 bhp @ 4000rpm and 160Nm @ 2000rpm, the engine isn’t very powerful, but is much more
drivable than its competitors with loads of low end twist. There is practically no turbo lag and you don’t even
feel the turbo kicking-in. With its high fuel efficiency, this car is near perfect for day-to-day city commutes. We
have experienced this diesel engine earlier on the Fiesta and the Ikon and can vouch for its practicality and
frugality.
The Grande Punto comes with the options of three engines – 1.2 and 1.4 petrols and a 1.3 turbo
diesel. Comparing apples with apples, the 1.2 litre petrol mill of the Punto is the least powerful of the lot on
OHC stands for Single Overhead Camshaft. That means that there is only one camshaft per header.
Inline engines will contain one camshaft. V-type and/or flat will contain 2 camshafts. For a SOHC engine
there are usually 2 valves per cylinder but there can be more with the addition of cams for each valve.
DOHC stands for Double Overhead Camshaft. Now there are 2 camshafts per header. So in an inline
there are 2 camshafts because there is only one header, but there is 4 in a V-type or flat engine. These
DOHC engines usually have 4 valves. One camshaft for the exhaust valves and the other for the intake
valves.
Advantages to having a DOHC engine over a SOHC is that the engine has twice as many intake and
exhaust valves as a SOHC motor. This makes the engine run cooler and more smoothly, quietly, and
efficiently. But the downfall is that DOHC engines cost more for repairs. To ensure against expensive
engine repairs, make sure you change your engine's timing belt about every 60,000 miles.
As we all know MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection) is common fuel system used in petrol cars, it uses
'batch firing' technology and fires all the injectors for one bank of the engine at once.
SEFI (Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection) also know as SFI. It fires each injector separately and gives
slightly better fuel mileage and less emission at lower RPMs compare to MPFI.
Currently I see Ford & Chevrolet vehicles comes SEFI whereas Maruti & Hyundai vehicles comes with
MPFI
In sequential fuel injection systems there is a camshaft position sensor, which the ECM uses to determine which fuel
injector to fire. The last component is the oxygen sensor. After the vehicle has warmed up, it uses the signal from the
oxygen sensor to perform fine tuning of the fuel trim
the injected fuel mass is tailored for each individual induction event. Every induction event, of every cylinder, of the
entire engine, is a separate fuel mass calculation, and each injector receives a unique pulse width based on that
cylinder's fuel requirements.

Automated underbody framing robots build the lower and upper body structure of the vehicle. This operation requires
absolute precision, as large metal structures are assembled and spot-welded into vehicle floorpans.
The body shop has also become “flexible”, with a framing line designed for handling up to six different models
simultaneously in a single line.
Other features of the body shop include:
• Portable measuring machine: to measure jigs and fixtures for build precision.
• Part checking fixture: to measure all major subassemblies, body, front-end and rear-end fit and finish.
• Real-time seal gap measuring equipment: a step up over measuring seal gaps with hand-held calipers.
Why these robots are special
Once we program a robot, it can perform complex and repetitive tasks quickly and precisely. The body shop welding
robots are equipped with new servo motor welding guns. These are quieter than the older welding-gun technology,
and deliver high-quality welds that are cleaner, with reduced expulsion and burring. Servo motors allow the welding
tips to be brought smoothly into place, which helps to eliminate distortion of the metal and ensure stable weld
pressure.
Why robots? “A modern automobile plant needs robotics to get the precision that’s essential to a well-constructed
vehicle,” says Tom Chackalackal, Vice-President, Manufacturing, Ford India.
Big impact
The robots have made processes speedier. Our body shop capacity has more than doubled, from 15 to 34 jobs an
hour. The new line is “future engineered” – flexible enough to build different vehicles one after the other. The new
body shop line will build vehicles in Ford India’s current product portfolio as well as the Figo.
With enhanced production efficiency and quantum leap in quality, the plant is now geared to deliver even higher
Chennai: Ford Figo rolled out of the Maraimalai Nagar facility on February 5, 2010. The US car major has
invested $500 million for setting up the state-of-the-art facility. The new facility will manufacture both petrol and
diesel versions of Ford Figo, which is set to hit the Indian roads by March-end.
"After the domestic launch, Ford Figo will be exported to other countries," said Michael Boneham, President and
MD, Ford India. The price of the car is likely to be competitive in the compact segment due to localisation of major
auto components.
Prior to setting up this facility, Ford also examined its facilities across the globe and has brought the best
practices for manufacturing in line with the Indian requirements.
Duly aided by robots, the world-class unit has the capacity to produce 2.5 lakh engines per annum.
After the expansion, Ford India houses 3,000 employees at the Maraimalai Nagar facility.
Ford boasts to have the most advanced paint shop in India. Their cars are painted with what they call Three-
Wet technology which reduces the volatile waste into the environment by upto 20 percent. Cother
advantages, as claimed are a better finish and more durability. Some interesting facts about Ford’s paint line
are as stated below
• The facility is first Ford car plant globally to introduce new Three-Wet High-Solids paint process, which delivers a
superior finish with high gloss and depth of colour, improved durability and better resistance against scratches and
stone chips.
• The Ford Chennai facility is the first automobile manufacturing plant in India with Three-Wet High-Solids paint
technology.
• New automated paint booth features robots to apply three coats of paint – primer, base coat and clear coat – over
top of one another. This “three-wet” approach eliminates the need for oven baking between coats.
• The new paint process produces less carbon dioxide emissions and reduces volatile organic compounds
emissions by about 20 percent as compared to current medium-solids solvent-borne paints.
• Higher solids content, mixed with new polymers and other additives, minimises running and sagging during the
application process. This facilitating the application of the three wet in series before oven curing.
• Paint shop capacity moves from 15 vehicles per hour to 34.
• The new paint booth uses 16 robots – eight for the base coat application and four each for the primer and clear
coat.
• The new system also incorporates a new robotic underbody sealer application process. It uses three robots to
apply the sealer, a quicker, higher quality approach for vehicle quality.
• Colour choice flexibility increases from eight to 11 different colours.
• Hydraulic pumps replace pneumatic pumps in the paint preparation and delivery process

. According to a study published in 2003 by the British Medical Journal, cars with silver colors tend to be
safer in the road. They have fewer disasters and less crash injuries. However, there is no certain color that
can be called as the safest because it always depends on the car’s driver.
How it meant a paradigm shift for Ford? How you had to think differently for Figo in terms
of costs, design & engineering, sourcing, product development, pricing?
Yes, it was a paradigm shift for Ford. We had Fusion before but we could not price position it as it had
poor localisation. For Figo, we did a lot of value-engineering to bring down the cost of the vehicle
without compromising on the ride quality or performance of the car. Take the doors, for instance. In
case of minor accidents and dents, which are common in India, the door has to be replaced completely
after damage in most cases. In the case of the Figo, since the material (the sheet metal) has been
sourced locally, one would need to just change the skin of the door instead of the entire assembly.
This was a first-in-class feature offered in India. We did a lot of value-engineering. Take the AC
compressor. If something went wrong with the unit in our cars, earlier one had to replace the entire
assembly; now you can just replace that specific part. Earlier, there were issues with our AC
compressors, the engines or wiring connectors. We have done value-engineering to bring down the
cost of parts and ownership for the customer. Yes, we have trained the sales team to explain these to
our customers.

Ford Figo Titanium Punto 1.3 Mjd Dynamic Punto 1.4 Emotion Pack
Diesel petrol
Final Words A very good value for money family car which has little bit of good things from
all others (spaciousness like Vista, not as beautiful as i20/punto but moderately good looks)
and above all best in class boot space (284 ltrs). I was concerned about service and spare
cost, but as they have invested a lot in the new plant at Chennai where 80% parts are
indigenized and because of child component concept, you dont have to replace the whole
assembly, maintenance might not be an issue unlike Ford Ikons (especially 1.8D). If you are
buying a Ford however, do check the reputation of the dealer for peace of mind. Mine is Planet
Ford from Pune for whom I got very good references, so I got my car from them. The delivery
and after sales experience was good.

Laminated glass basically consists of two layers of shaped annealed glass bonded together by a tough,
pliable and invisible layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). This glazed sandwich offers three main benefits:
increased comfort, security and safety.
laminated glazing also offers an opportunity to create advanced glazings with additional features, such
as coatings or wire heating for de-misting, or modified interlayers.

The alternator (generator) supplies electric power for the vehicle's electric systems and also recharges the battery when
the engine is running. If it fails, the engine will continue to run using the battery power, but the car will eventually stop
as soon as the battery will be completely discharged. When the alternator fails, there is a warning light on the
instrument panel that comes on with the engine running. Usually it's something like
or "charge" warning light. If you see that sign on your instrument panel while driving, have your vehicle inspected before
it dies on you
Ball Joint
A ball joint is a part of a vehicle front suspension. Most cars have one or two ball joints at each front wheel. When a ball
joint becomes bad, a vehicle could be unsafe to drive; a ball joint, when badly worn, can disjoin causing the vehicle to
lose control unexpectedly.
One of the possible indication of a bad ball joint could be a knocking noise coming from the front end, particularly while
driving over bumps or making sharp turns. If you suspect your vehicle has a bad ball joint or any other suspension
component, have your car inspected as soon as you can, it can be unsafe to drive. It's recommended to check the
vehicle's chassis in a garage on a lift at least once a year to discover potential problems with suspension, brakes and
other components.
Battery
The battery provides electric power to start the car. I get many questions like "My car doesn't start, it only makes a click-
click noise when I'm trying to start it" - this is most likely the result of the battery having decided to quit. Unfortunately,
usually it happens unexpectedly - the battery just stops working one day. If your vehicle doesn't start and you suspect
the battery, there is a simple way to check it. Try switching the wipers on - if they move very slowly, a lot slower than
usual (too low voltage) the battery is probably discharged or dead.
Driven-by-wire
If older vehicles use cable or mechanical link to operate the throttle, many of the new cars have electronic, "driven-by-
wire" throttle control. This means that there is no longer a mechanical connection between the gas pedal and the
throttle: There is a sensor connected to the gas pedal. Once you step on the gas pedal, it sends the signal to the vehicle's
computer, which in turn opens the throttle using an electronic actuator. The actuator helps optimize engine
performance by keeping the emission level low. Also, there is no more need for additional idle control and cruise control
systems - these functions are controlled by the vehicle computer using the same electronic throttle actuator.
EGR system
The EGR system (Exhaust Gas Recirculation system) is designed to reduce emissions. To be precise, it lowers the amount
of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust emissions. Nitrogen oxides are formed at very high combustion temperatures.
What the EGR system actually does is direct part of the exhaust gases back into the intake manifold, which in turn helps
reduce the combustion temperature and consequently lower the amount of NOx in the exhaust gases. The EGR flow is
controlled by the engine computer which opens or closes the EGR valve depending on the operating conditions. One of
the most common problems related to EGR is that the passages or the EGR valve itself getting clogged with carbon
deposits causing restrictions to the EGR gas flow. This turns the "check engine" light on and sets the code, for example,
PO401 - insufficient EGR flow (this was a common problem for the Acura / Honda V6 engine, for example). This problem
happens mostly if a car is driven for only short trips so it can't warm up fully, or when the oil is not changed regularly.
Overdrive
Generally speaking, overdrive (O/D) is the highest gear in the transmission. On most cars the automatic transmission has
three or four speeds and overdrive (which is fourth or fifth speed accordingly). Overdrive allows the engine to have less
rpm with higher speed for better fuel efficiency. When you switch it ON, you allow the transmission to shift into
overdrive mode after a certain speed has been reached (usually 30-40 mph depending on the load). When it's OFF, you
limit transmission shifting to third or fourth speed, not allowing the transmission to shift into overdrive.
In normal driving conditions the overdrive should be always ON. You may need to switch it OFF if you drive in a
mountainous area.
[The automatic transmission automatically shifts from O/D to the lower gear when it feels more load. When it feels less
load it shifts back to O/D, but under certain conditions, e.g. driving uphill or towing a trailer, the transmission cannot
decide whether to stay in O/D or shift into 3rd speed and it starts shifting back and forth. That's the time when you may
switch the O/D off and help the transmission to decide].
You also may need to switch the Overdrive OFF when you want to slow down using the engine braking, for example,
when driving downhill. For more details, check your owner's manual
During the study the problems faced by the customers are also analyzed while survey and the opinions
from that are as follows:
1.Fuel consumption is one of the problems faced by the customers according to the study.
2.Very poor quality of plastic, big turning radius has made the customers inconvenient.
3.Inconvenient to reverse the car, starting car requires lots of efforts are making the
customers more difficult in driving. This is the problem of the comfort.
4.A/C not good for summer, Rear boot opener are the other problems faced by the customers
5.Ground clearance is needed and central locking not available
6.The customers have problem with the headlight of the car.
7.Poor quality of the music system.
My Verdict [jm] - Figo does well with above all the conditions
our-wheel ABS
The four-wheel ABS or Anti-lock Braking System is designed to help the driver maintain steering control
during hard braking, especially in slippery conditions. How it works:
Imagine, you are driving a car without ABS on a slippery road (e.g. after a rain or snow). Suddenly, you
notice something on the road right in front of you. You hit the brakes, and try to turn aside, but the
steering doesn't work; the car just skids out of control (see the picture). Why, because all the wheels are
locked up while you are holding down the brake pedal. As a result, you lose the ability to steer the
vehicle.
The four-wheel ABS can help in situations like this. It prevents the wheels from locking up, helping you
maintain steering control during braking. In a similar situation, driving a car equipped with four-wheel
ABS, it would be easier for you to steer your vehicle while braking.
Manual transmission cars are the cars that allow the driver to change the gears as per driving needs and there is a
manual clutch pedal used while changing gears. The clutch uses solid clutch plate and pressure plate mechanism.
What is Automatic Transmission ?
Automatic transmission on the other hand works automatically depending on the vehicle speed and engine speed. In
automatic transmission cars, there is no clutch pedal, and clutch-plate mechanism is replaced with a hydraulic torque
convertor.
SOHC and DOHC are basically two different ways to configure the valvetrain. In the whole valve train
setup there are camshafts, lifters, rockers, valves and springs. It is best that the valvetrain is light. Valves
open at intervals of 25 times a second at 3000rpm. If the valvetrain is heavy, when the camshaft lifts it
the valvetrain will just keep going up until the valve spring catches it. This is called valve float. You can
overcome this with stronger (which means heavier) springs, but this extra weight increases the power
requirements to open the valve.
The cams are driven by the crankshaft, using either a belt or chain called a timing belt or timing chain. If
the timing belt/chain snaps and the camshaft stops spinning, the piston coming back up the combustion
chamber might hit the open valves. This is very costly. That’s why you should always change your timing
belt/chain at the interval specified by your car manufacturer.
SOHC refers to Single Overhead Camshaft. In the days before DOHC, it was known as OHC, with no need
to differentiate between a single or double camshaft. In SOHC, the camshaft is situated in the cylinder
head, above the valves. The valves are opened and closed either directly with a shim between the cam
lobe and the valve stem, or via a rocker arm. SOHC engine valve configurations typically have 2 or 3
valves per cylinder. It is also possible to have 4 valves per cylinder using SOHC but this translates into a
complicated combination of rocker arms and cam lobe shapes. An example would be the 4G92P in my
car which is a SOHC but has 4 valves per cylinder.
DOHC refers to Double Overhead Camshaft. This arrangement uses two camshafts in each cylinder head.
Two cams per cylinder head means that a DOHC V engine has 4 camshafts because it has 2 banks of
cylinder heads. This allows the manufacturer to easily implement a 4 valve per cylinder setup. Most of
the time it also allows the engine to rev higher. It also allows better placement of the valves in an
optimized setup that gives you maximum performance. But the disadvantage of such a setup is more
weight, more cost and more complexity. It takes more stuff to drive two camshafts. The main reason to
use DOHC is to drive more valves per cylinder. If a SOHC setup can allow 4 valves per cylinder, having a
DOHC engine will not bring that much benefits over SOHC and the additional weight becomes a burden
instead. DOHC engines also allows the spark plug to be placed right in the middle of the combustion
chamber. This promotes efficient combustion. With SOHC, the camshaft is usually in the middle of the
head because it has to drive both the intake and exhaust valves, robbing the sparkplug of it’s optimal
location.
In the end, a SOHC 16 valve engine would have better torque on the low end where the DOHC
valvetrain’s weight results in lower torque. But at high engine speeds, the 16 valve DOHC engine’s peak
torque and horsepower would be greater. That’s the trade-off. With the amount of valves being equal,
SOHC has better low-end torque because the valvetrain package is lighter while DOHC has better top-
end power.
Other benefits of DOHC would be making it easier to implement variable valve timing technologies
(which I will cover in another blog post) and also you can tweak it better with adjustable cam pulleys. If
you were to put high-profile cams in your DOHC engine, the cam lobe profile can also be more
optimized than a SOHC engine because you can play around with the lobe shape easier with separate
camshafts for the intake and exhaust valves.
Why more valves per cylinder? Why not just make 1 huge intake valve and 1 huge exhaust valve? Bigger
valves weigh more than the smaller one, so controlling the extra weight as it gets flung open and close
becomes difficult. The spring has to be stiffer. A stiffer spring means more energy has to be spent
overcoming the valve pressure. This partially oversets the gains which a bigger valve has to offer.
Another problem with a single big valve is at lower RPMs the intake velocity will be lower. I’m sure you
guys know this… the same amount of air going through a big pipe will have lower pressure than the
same air going through a smaller opening. Think of how you can control the water pressure of your
garden hose by adjusting the opening size with your finger. Because of the velocity drop, low RPM
torque and driveability will suffer. Although two smaller valves weigh the same as 1 big valve, and with
the extra rocker arms and springs they can actually end up weighing more, this is offset by less mass to
We can see that torque at low RPMs are about the same for both engines, but at higher speeds the 2-
valve per cylinder engine has reached it’s peak and has to switch to the next gear while the twincam 4
valve per cylinder engine continues making more power at the top-end of the powerband. The
powerband is also longer. (Note: I’ve added this graph here to show you the difference between 2-valve
and 4-valves, not SOHC vs DOHC. Couldn’t find any graphs for SOHC vs DOHC. Sorry!)
So to sum it all up, SOHC has better low-end power, DOHC has better high-end power and overall
maximum power. 4 valves per cylinder is much better than 2 valves per cylinder and it doesn’t matter
whether 4-valves is achieved via SOHC or DOHC.
