Recording audio using Audacity

Double click on the Audacity shortcut

If it is the first time you have ever

run Audacity on your computer you
will have to select a language.

To tell the computer where the audio

is coming from you need to choose a
source.

Microphone is the red socket

Line in is the blue socket
What you hear or Stereo mix is the
sounds made by the pc (for
recording internet radio)

Before you start recording you must

check the sound levels on your
recording.

Select the down arrow next to the

microphone. In the menu that
appears select Monitor input.

If you are recording through a

microphone then start your group
talking.

If you are recording from the internet

then play your clip.

It is important that you find a loud

part and not necessarily the start.

Red bars will then appear showing

how loud the recording will be.

Your recording must be louder than

–24 and quieter than 0.

Warning: Your recording will be

irreversibly poor if at any point the
sound goes above 0.

Press stop after your clip / interview

has ended.

If you want to delete the recording

then you must not just press record
again.

Instead click on the X to delete and

then repeat step 7, 8 and 9.

To save your audio file go to the file

menu and select Export as MP3.

Project As….

Save your file onto the media server.

If you are asked for a username and
password to connect to the media
server then type

User name: soton\yourIssUsername

Password: yourIssPassword

Note that ‘\’ is a backslash and not a

forward slash (normally next to Z)

You have your own directory in

Private Files then in a directory with
your own ISS username.

Some colleagues may also have

some space in the #shared directory.

If you get the following message

then select Yes and locate the file

C:\Program Files\Audacity\Plug-
Ins\lame_enc.dll

This step shouldn’t need to be done

more than once, if ever.

When you close the program you will

be asked to save.

You should not save changes as

long as you have exported the mp3.
