c c c ADVANTAGES OF WIND TURBINES

•c Wind power is a renewable resource, which can replace fossil fuel in generation of
electricity.

•c The energy it produces does not cause green house gases or other pollutants and thus
can mitigate global warming.

•c Although wind turbines can be very tall each takes up only a small plot of land. This
means that the land below can still be used for farming in case of agricultural areas.

•c Wind turbines have a role to play in both the developed and third world.

DISADVANTAGES OF WIND TURBINES

c c

•c The strength of the wind is not constant and it varies from zero to storm force. This
means that wind turbines do not produce the same amount of electricity all the time.
There will be times when they produce no electricity at all.

•c When wind turbines are being manufactured some pollution is produced.

•c To meet the energy demands worldwide in the future in a sustainable way, a much
larger number of turbines than we have today will be required. Naturally this will
affect more people and wildlife habitat.
