Atoms and Molecules Activity number: ____

Name: Date:
Course and Section: Score: ____/____

I. Objective:

II. Materials:
Glass/ beaker needle
Marble/ plastic beads detergent/ powder
Sand (grains) kalamansi/ buko juice
Test tube 3 plastic straw with different diameter
Medicine dropper but with same length
H2O

III. Procedure:
A. Spaces:
1. Fill glass with marbles/ plastic beads until you cannot add more.
2. Then pour grains of sand into the same container.
3. Record the observation.

1. Fill test tube with as much water as it can hold.

2. Use medicine dropper to add the last few drops.
3. Then gently drop a few grains of sand into the water.
4. Observe and record.

B. Attraction:
1. Pour water into a glass/ beaker.
2. Gently place a dry needle horizontally on the surface of the water.
3. Observe and record.
4. Try again to place the needle vertically into the water.
5. Compare, observe, and record your observations.
6. Drop a small amount of detergent on one corner of the water.
7. Observe and record the behavior of the needle.

C. Capillarity:
1. Put kalamansi or buko juice in a big drinking glass or any wide mouthed transparent container until
it is half full.
2. Dip three pieces of glass tubing or straw with different diameters but same length.
3. Observe the water that enters the straw.
IV. Table and Results:

V. Questions and Answer:

1. Why can glass containers accommodate the sand when it cannot accommodate more marbles?

2. Does the water spill? Why?

3. Does the needle float or sink? Why?

4. What happen to the needle after dropping small amount of detergent?

5. In which straw does the water rises the highest?
