1. (a) What is an OP-AMP? Why it is called so? [4]
(b) Explain the parameters that should be considered for ac and dc applications of an OP-AMP [5] (c) Draw and explain the three open loop OP-AMP configurations with neat circuit diagram [7] 2. (a) What is a clipper? With circuit diagram, explain the operation of positive and negative clippers [10] (b) Describe the principle of operation of a precision half wave rectifier with wave forms [6] 3. (a) Explain the function of a typical adjustable voltage regulator. How can you increase the current driving capacity of the regulator? [6] (b) Describe the principle of working of a balanced modulator using OP-AMP. Also give the appli- cations of it. [10] 4. (a) What are the two basic modes in which the 555 timer operates? Briefly explain the differences between the two operating modes of the 555 timer. [8] (b) Design a ramp generator using 555 timer having an output frequency of approximately 5KHz. [8] 5. Discuss the significance of phase detector, Low pass filter, amplifier and a VCO in PLL. [16] 6. (a) Explain the design procedure (with suitable circuit diagram of a fourth order Butterworth low- pass filter). [10] (b) A certain narrow band-pass filter has been designed to meet the following specifications: fC =2kHz. Q=20, and Ap =10. What modifications are necessary in the filter circuit to change the center frequency ‘fc ’ to 1kHz, keeping the gain and band-width constant? [6] 7. (a) What are the desirable features of CMOS gates? [5] (b) Sketch the circuit of CMOS NAND gate and verify that it satisfies the Boolean NAND equation. [6] (c) Define the following terms : [5] i. Fan-in ii. Fan-out iii. Standard load iv. Current sink v. Current source 8. (a) List out different types of A/D converters and compare their merits and demerits. [6] (b) Give the schematic circuit of integrating type A/D converter and explain the operation of this system and derive expression for output voltage Vo . [10]
