WEEK 7

Everyone has been asking why they have a lesson called drama since the beginning of the
term. Actually, when I saw the context and after a while , I had no question in my mind about
its usefulness or uselessness.
Drama is a very crucial tool enabling learners with a context in which a structure or a
function is used with an authentic language. Drama encourages group work ana cooparation
among learners. Body and voice animation makes teacher more effectious in terms of
teaching. It is so
mething extraordinary learners are not used to experiencing as teher are stil so many
instructors going on using traditional methods.
Last but not least, drama gives oppotunity to have fun in the process of both learning and
teaching.
Drama has three factors to be emphasized:
1.Event - should be understandable, interesting and absorbing to learners ,
- should not be aimless but provide learners with structures ana functions
subconsciously.
- should be short ana simple enough.
- should not preferably include inappropriate cultural elements students will
have problem in understanding.
- there are five types of event: role-play, improvisation, story-telling,
pantomime and simulation.
2. Setting -should be simple.
- use of accessories gives an effective impression in terms of motavation and
attention.
-there should not be so much interference ana limitation to sts’ creativity and
they should be set free as much as possible.
3.Characterization -sts should be given role-cards to provide them with a more concrete
‘what to do’ list
- opposite characters should be created so that the plot will be
interesting
- also every chr should have a name.
Teachers shoul be careful while appliying a drama activity. The things she
should avoid are as such;
o interrupting the activity ana giving feedback while the activity is stil
going on
o forcing sts to paricipate in the activity
emphasizing small mistakes and if possible avoid judging the person
who makes the mistake not the mistake itself.
o not giving feedback in the end
The things she should be generous are as such;
o using role cards to make the event-characterization ana setting clear
o using a narrator to inform what is going to happen
o using accessories
o giving feedback in the end
o using fun in the activity
o choosing a drama activity to increase the cooparation among sts and
an avtivity having non-linguistic aims at the same time.
