I11 THE CONCEPT I N THE THEORY OF TERMINOLOGY


In t h i s c h a p t e r we e n t e r t h e f u n d a m e n t a l c o n c e p t u a l n e t w o r k o f
t h e t h e o r y o f t e r m i n o l o g y . The q u e s t i o n " w h a t i s t h e c o n c e p t " i s
t r e a t e d thoroughly. I n d i v i d u a l concepts a r e d i s t i n g u i s h e d from
g e n e r a l c o n c e p t s . I n t e n s i o n and e x t e n s i o n a r e d i s c u s s e d by means
o f i l l u s t r a t i v e e x a m p l e s a s . w e l l a s t h e e m e r g e n c e o f new c o n c e p t s
t h r o u g h t h e c o m b i n a t i o n of e x i s t i n g c o n c e p t s . A b a l a n c e d o v e r v i e w
is g i v e n of p o s s i b l e c l a s s i f i c a t i o n s of c o n c e p t u a l c h a r a c t e r i -
s t i c s and t h i s i s f o l l o w e d up w i t h a n e v a l u a t i o n o f t h e p r a g m a t i c
i m p o r t a n c e of t h e c h o i c e o f c o n c e p t u a l c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s .
D e f i n i t i o n s a r e f i r s t d i s c u s s e d f r o m a t h e o r e t i c a l a n g l e . The
v a r i o u s t y p e s a r e e x e m p l i f i e d a n d t h e i r i n h e r e n t a s s e t s a n d draw-
b a c k s a s s e s s e d . Good e x a m p l e s g i v e a c l e a r i d e a of f a u l t y d e f i n i -
t i o n s and a l s o o f t h e d i f f i c u l t y of w r i t i n g a p p r o p r i a t e o n e s . I t
i s made c l e a r t h a t c o n c e p t s a n d d e f i n i t i o n s a r e n o t s t a t i c p h e n o -
mena b u t o p e n t o u p d a t i n g a n d r e v i s i o n . I t a l s o becomes a p p a r e n t
t h a t d e f i n i t i o n s s h o u l d n o t be s t u d i e d i n i s o l a t i o n b u t a s p a r t s
of a system of d e f i n i t i o n s w i t h i n a conceptual network.

I V TYPES OF RELATIONS BETWEEN CONCEPTS, SYSTEMS OF CONCEPTS AND


THEIR REPRESENTATION
The c e n t r a l n o t i o n o f t e r m i n o l o g y , t h e s y s t e m o f c o n c e p t s , i s
e l a b o r a t e d on i n t h i s c h a p t e r . The c o n s t r u c t i o n oE a c o n c e p t s y -
s t e m i s t r e a t e d from t h e a n g l e o f c l a s s i f y i n g c r i t e r i a and t h e i r
r e l a t i o n s . The t y p e s o f r e l a t i o n s ( l o g i c a l , o n t o l o g i c a l a n d
o t h e r s ) a r e d i s c u s s e d i n d e t a i l a n d t h e i r u s e i n b o t h mono- a n d
p o l y h i e r a r c h i c a n d mixed s y s t e m s i s w e l l i l l u s t r a t e d w i t h exam-
p l e s f r o m s e v e r a l l a n g u a g e s . We a l s o o b t a i n a good i d e a of how
v a r i o u s forms of g r a p h i c r e p r e s e n t a t i o n can be used t o s u p p o r t a
verbal description. The c o n c l u s i v e r e m a r k s s u m m a r i z e t h e main
p o i n t s of the c h a p t e r and s t r e s s the c o n c r e t e b e n e f i t s of t h e
f o r m u l a t i o n of c o n c e p t systems.

V THE TERM
H e r e we move t o t h e s u r f a c e l e v e l o f t e r m i n o l o g y , t h e a c t u a l l i n -
g u i s t i c r e p r e s e n t a t i o n s o f c o n c e p t s . The r e l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n
c o n c e p t a n d t e r m i s e x p a n d e d on f r o m d i f f e r e n t t h e o r e t i c a l a n g -
l e s . Terms a r e s t u d i e d i n t h e n e t w o r k o f c o n v e n t i o n a l i z e d s i g n s
and as elements i n a system of terms - t h e terminology of a p a r -
t i c u l a r s u b j e c t f i e l d . Monosemy, p o l y s e m y , synonymy, e q u i v a l e n c e
a n d homonymy a r e d i s c u s s e d a s t y p e s o f t e r m - c o n c e p t r e l a t i o n s a n d
terminologization, compounding, derivation, conversion, loan
w o r d s a n d a b b r e v i a t i o n s a s means o f t e r m - f o r m a t i o n .

T h e s e t e c h n i c a l a s p e c t s a r e f o l l o w e d by recommenda t i o n s o f w h a t
s h o u l d b e k e p t i n mind when new terms a r e f o r m e d . The recommenda-
t i o n s a r e b a s e d on p r a c t i c a l e x p e r i e n c e a n d i n c l u d e s u c h r u l e s o f
thumb a s t h a t t h e terms m u s t b e w e l l - m o t i v a t e d , systematic,
g r a m m a t i c a l l y c o r r e c t , p o t e n t i a l l y p r o d u c t i v e , s h o r t , and n o t
h a v e c o n f u s i n g synonyms - a l l t h i s w i t h o u t f o r g e t t i n g t h e s o c i o -
l i n g u i s t i c s i d e of the m a t t e r ( u s e r a t t i t u d e s and i n t e r n a t i o n a l
a s p e c t s ).

p a r t i a l e q u i v a l e n c e between l a n g u a g e s a c e d e s c r i b e d a s w e l l a s
t h e e x i s t e n c e of " f a l s e f r i e n d s " i n m u l t i l i n g u a l terminologies.

The n e c e s s i t y f o r i n t e r n a t i o n a l c o - o p e r a t i o n comes o u t c l e a r l y i n
t h i s c h a p t e r t h a t s e t s o u t t o i l l u s t r a t e t h e v a r i o u s f o r m s of c o -
o p e r a t i o n t h a t e x i s t a t t h e moment. E v a l u a t i v e a n d somewhat s u b -
