I. OBJECTIVES:

II. A good defensive back must have confidence th6t he can cover his area, and tremendous desire to get to the ball when it is thrown. III. Tackling is 90% desire and 10% skill. It you are short on skills we can teach you, but the desire has to come from you.

IV. Every play is a pass until run shows. Key the ball and know what receivers on your side are doing. On snap of ball shuffle back and

out and play football from thereo All defenders must sprint to point of ball when Passer releases the ball. The ball can be completed, tipped, or intercetffied and you must be in the area where ball is thrown to tackle receiver and ~ the tip or throw.

Monster is the man who makes our defenses unbalanced by declarin,g to one side or the other. Consequently J a wide play to your side should mean a loss or no gain for the opposing team. RULES FOR DECIMING:

B. Two Men out:

1. Automatic "You" call

2. Play on outside man until split between the two men gets

over 8 yards. Then drop off to an inside position on outside man.

SIANT TACKLE: Line up head 011 the offensiVe tackle with your feet parallel. On the snap of the ball, slant to the inside

at a 45 degree ~lgle and key the guard. On plays your

way, turn up the field into the play. If the guard blocks out, flatten or spin and get to the inside. (You must learn to read the difference between a turn out block and a hook block by the guard). If the guard pulls, get in his hip pocket. If the guard blocks dOWl', turn inside to meet the t.rap, On plays a't'lay, you must close to the center before pursuing. Rush all passes.

§.gRAPE ~ ~: Line up on the outside eye of the offensive guard with your feet parallel and just behind the feet of the defensive linemen. Key the ball on flow your way, scrape off. Do not scrape off if the ball is right behind the center. Flow away, go to the ball. Back up pass, go to your hook. Flaw pass away, go to deep middle unless there is divide, then go to your hook.

NQSE &H: Line up about 6ft off the ball on the center's nose with a parallel scance , On the snap of the ball, slant away from monster at a 1.5 degree angle. Feel for the center with your hands and key the guard. If the guard blocks down, flatten or spin and get outside him. If the guard pulls, get in his hip pocket. If the center is cutting you off, control his head and go to the ballo If he ia cutting you off away from your slant, pull him by with your hands and run around his block. Rush all passes.

SHUFFLE ,Ii:

Line up on the outside eye of the offensive guard with a parallel sta.nce and your feet just behind the fe·et of the defensive linemen. Key the boll, but you must also see the HB on your side. The ball comes your way, step up to the gap between the G and T and go to the ba1l. If the HB leads on you, you must take him on his outside shoulder. Flow away, go to ball unless HB leads on you, then take him on. Back up pass, your hook. Flow pass your way, relative hook. Flow pass away. Deep middle unless you get a divide, then your hook. With an Omaha call a~d the end split, cover

HB in the flat on flow pass your way.

1QQl:IACKLE:

Line up wider and slightly off the ball. On the snap of the ball, take a short late~al, step to the outside and eyeball the end. If he is blocking on you, whip him with your hands, and get to a head up position where you can make plays outside. The exception is when the end is trying to hook the end.

If the tackle is not blocking you after le&ning into his

block, play the trap. Flow away, trail. (Don't be in a

hurry).

BLOOD »ID:

Line up with your outside foot back and your inside foot on the nose of the offensive end. On the snap of the ball, strike at end with your hand and step laterally to the outside with your back foot. Next, hop to a position on the line in your original stance. If the end is blocking out on you, fight his block, and be ready to roll back inside. If the ball is coming toward you on the line,

Line up head on the tackle and charge hard up field through the gap inside or ,outside depending on the LB'ers call. Flow away, "Trail't - oontain rush on back up pass on Tight Out.
