Abstract: This paper describes the principle and features of the DPLEX shield method. An improved version of the EPB
shield method, the new method can be used to build tunnels of virtually any cross-section shape. This paper
also gives an outline of the application of the DPLEX method in the construction of a rectangular (4.2 m x 3.8
m) sewerage tunnel under unusually severe conditions - the small overburden, narrow road, and presence of
several embedded structures.
