Open Source Software

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form

for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are
provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software.
Open source licenses often meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition. Some open
source software is available within the public domain. Open source software is very often
developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent
example ofopen-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated
content or (legally defined) open content movements. The term open-source softwareoriginated
as part of a marketing campaign for free software.

Hardware is a general term for the physical artifacts of a technology. It may also mean
the physical components of a computer system, in the form of computer hardware. The term
open source hardware usually means that information about the hardware is easily discerned.
Hardware design (i.e. schematics, bill of materials and PCB layout data) in addition to the
software that drives the hardware are all released with the open source approach.

Software is the collection of computer programs and related data that provide the

instructions telling a computer what to do. The term was coined to contrast to the old
term hardware (meaning physical devices). In contrast to hardware, software is intangible,
meaning it "cannot be touched". Software is also sometimes used in a more narrow sense,
meaning application software only. Sometimes the term includes data that has not traditionally
been associated with computers, such as film, tapes and records.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System

2.1 Meaning of Open Source OS

Open Source OS is operating system that is liberally licensed to grant the right of
users to use, study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its
source code. This approach has gained both momentum and acceptance as the
potential benefits have been increasingly recognized by both individuals and
corporate players.

2.2 Example of open source OS

Ubuntu is an open source operating based on the Debian GNU/Linux Distribution
and distributed as free and open source software. With its usage of more than 12
million users, Ubuntu is designed for home and small office, but there are versions for
netbooks and servers as well and indicate upward usage as a web server. Ubuntu is
developed by Canonical Ltd. and Ubuntu Foundation. It’s in the Unix-like OS family.
It is an example of open source OS. The latest unstable release is 10.04 on 29 April
2010.
Xubuntu is an open source operating system, derived from the much-popular
operating system Ubuntu. It is designed for low-end or outdated hardware since it is
light on resources and not CPU-intensive. Same as Ubuntu, it is an Unix-based
operating system. Some applications such as Abiword, Firefox and GIMP are
provided in the operating system as well. The latest stable release is 10.10,
codenamed Maverick Meerkat and released at October, 10, 2010.

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software

3.1 Meaning of open source application software
Open Source application software is software that is available in source
code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved
for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to
study, change, and improve the software.

3.2 Examples of open source application software

Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser descended from
the Mozilla Application Suite and managed by Mozilla Corporation. The
OpenOffice.org project is primarily sponsored by Oracle Corporation (initially by
Sun Microsystems). Other major corporate contributors
include Novell, RedHat, RedFlag CH2000,IBM, Google and others.
OpenOffice.org, or commonly known as OOo or OpenOffice, is an open-
source software application suite available for a number of different
computer operating systems. It is distributed as free software and written using its
own GUI toolkit. It supports theISO/IEC standard OpenDocument Format (ODF)
for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office formats
among others. As of November 2009, OpenOffice supports over 110 languages.

4.2 Software
Microsoft Office 2010, codenamed Office 14, is a productivity suite for Microsoft
Windows, and the successor to Microsoft Office 2007. Office 2010 includes extended
file format support, user interface updates, and a refined user experience. On April 15,
2010, Microsoft announced that Office 2010 had been released to manufacturing,
with those Volume Licensing customers who have Software Assurance being able to
download the software from April 27, 2010.
The suite became available for retail as well as online purchase on June 15,
2010.Office 2010 marks the debut of free online versions of Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, and OneNote, which work in popular web browsers (Internet
Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari). A new edition of
Office, Office Starter 2010, replaced the low-end home productivity
software, Microsoft Works.
Microsoft's update to its mobile productivity suite, Office Mobile 2010, will also
be released for Windows Phones running Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Phone
7. In Office 2010, every application features the Ribbon, including OneNote,
Publisher, InfoPath, SharePoint Workspace (previously known as Groove), and the
new Office Web Apps. Compared to Office 2007, Office 2010 has a revamped user
interface, faster boot up and consumes less memory.
5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning of Pervasive Computing

Pervasive computing is the trend towards increasingly ubiquitous, it’s also known
as ubiquitous computing, connected computing devices in the environment, a trend
being brought about by a convergence of advanced electronic - and
particularly, wireless - technologies and the Internet. Pervasive computing devices are
not personal computers as we tend to think of them, but very tiny - even invisible -
devices, either mobile or embedded in almost any type of object imaginable,
including cars, tools, appliances, clothing and various consumer goods - all
communicating through increasingly interconnected networks.

5.2 Example of Pervasive Computing

Smart Phone is one of the examples of pervasive computing, it enables human and
computer interface. It is a mobile phone that offers more advanced computing ability
and connectivity than a basic 'feature phone'.
Biometric devices are also known as pervasive computer because it connects
computing devices in the environment, a trend being brought about by a convergence
of advanced electronics.

6.0 Conclusion

Although ICT brings along many advantages and convenience to our daily life, they
still have some disadvantages if we misuse it, so we must use it wisely and ethically to create
a healthy computer society so that the economy of our country can be improve followed by
the life standard of Malaysian.
