SURVEY PROBLEM

Q.10 (b) The top of a chimney was sighted from two stations A and B at very different levels, the station
A and B being in line with the top of the chimney. The angle of elevation to the top of the
chimney from A was 35o 28′ and from B was 20o 14′ . The angle of elevation from B to a vane
2 m above the foot of the staff held at A was 14o 15′ . The instrument height at A and F were
1.92 m and 1.75 m respectively. Given, AB = 130 m and the RL of
B = 115.650. Find the RL of the top of the chimney and the horizontal distance from A to the
chimney.

Q.4 (a) Two moving point loads 50 kN and 120 kN, with 50 kN leading, cross a simply supported girder
of 14 m span. Distance between the loads is 4 m. Calculate maximum SF and bending moment
at a section which is at 5 m from the right support. Use influence line method.
(b) A propped cantilever of span 12 m carries a concentrated load of 50 kN which is applied at a
distance of 4 m from the fixed support. Find support reactions and draw BMD and SFD for the
beam.
