P 04A TUTORIAL #3.

2010

1. A bus, on a straight road, accelerates from rest at a rate of 1 ms-2 for 30 s until it
acquires a maximum speed. It then moves at constant speed for 6 km, and
decelerates uniformly to rest in a distance of 300 m.

Calculate (i) the maximum speed of the bus,

(ii) the deceleration,
(iii) the total time of travel.
Ans. 30 ms-1; -1.5 ms-2 ; 250 s

2. The motion of an automobile on a straight highway can be represented by the set of

data provided in the table below. The acceleration is assumed to be uniform or
zero between the time intervals shown.

TIME (t) in seconds VELOCITY (v) in ms-1 DISTANCE (x ) in km

0 0 0
300 15 X1
t1 15 11.25
1200 0 X2

(In the above table, times and distances are given with respect to the initial position
defined by t=0 seconds. X= 0 km.)

Sketch the velocity - time for the motion of the automobile.

Determine (i) x1, t 1 and x2 . Answer 2.25 km, 900s, 13.5 km

(ii) the average velocity for the entire journey Answer 11.25
ms-1

3. (a) A bimetallic strip has a combination of steel and brass. Explain with the aid
of suitable diagrams the direction of bending of the strip when it is heated and
when it is cooled.

(b) A copper cylinder of diameter 4.0 cm and height 3.0 cm is heated from 27oC to
48oC. If the heated cylinder is then quickly immersed into a container filled to
the brim with liquid also at 48oC, how much liquid will be displaced ?.
[Assume: The coefficient of volume thermal expansion for copper = 51x 10-6(Co)-1]

Ans. 37.7 cm3

4. A can is filled with a liquid to 97% of its capacity. The temperature of the can and
the liquid is 4oC. The material from which the can is made has a coefficient of
volume expansion of 85x 10-6 (Co)-1. At a temperature of 104oC, the can is observed
to be filled to the brim. Determine the coefficient of volume expansion of the liquid.

Answer: 4 x10-4 (Co)-1
