idly and how this is going to influence global trends in economics and

interpreted and applied in ways that are culturally acceptable to people in
other countries. That one size does not fit all and you cannot force a peo-
ple to adopt an alien way of life, albeit it is democratic.
The East is a bewildering mixture of cultures, each is unique, each is dif-
ferent and each is rich in traditions passed down centuries.
To those living in the East, the ways of the West are very important in
understanding the intricacy of the politics that dictate economic trends
and indicate the shift of powers.

Ancient peoples from countries like
Egypt, Iran, India, Tibet and China
were among the world’s greatest innova-
tors. They charted the movement of the
heavens, developed the basic founda-
tion for calendars and astronomy. They
introduced plastic surgery, invented
paper and printing. They created glass,
made the first compass, wrote the first
novel, built great monuments. It was their
“how’s” and “why’s” about the world they
lived in that led to the foundations of art,
literature, music, astronomy, science and
medicine – to name a few. So ground-
breaking were their discoveries and
innovations that many survive to this
day and are a part of our everyday life.
These are countries rich in ancient culture
and traditions. Many of these countries
are emerging out of their long hibernation
and reconnecting with the global economy,
promising an exciting future of a new wave
of creativity and innovation.
Emerging economic giant of the
21st century
The next 15 years will see Asia re-shaping
the world economy. Competition from
China, the third largest producer of manu-
factured goods, is already restraining the
pricing of manufactured goods world-
wide. India, although lagging behind
China, is predicted to overtake China in
the coming years. It is today the fastest
growing free-market economy in the world
forecast to become one of the world’s
top five economies by 2025.
As countries like China, India and other
developing countries actively participate
in the global economy, hundreds of
millions of working adults will become
part of a more inter-related world labour
market. Investment flows are changing as
are world patterns of production, trade,
employment and wages. The multina-
tional companies from the most advanced
countries are already starting to adapt their
business practices to accommodate the
demands of these fast rising economies.
 AFRICA
The cradle of mankind
Africa is believed to be the continent
where human life began. It holds secrets
to how we evolved into this complex
web of cultures and communities spread
out all over the world. Africans were the
world’s first great innovators.
Millions of years ago they developed the
technology of stone tools. Later they cre-
ated the bow and arrow. It was in Africa
that Man began to first domesticate
animals and started agriculture. Clay
pottery also had its origins in Africa
thousands of years ago.
Africa is an endless resource of creative
content that originated thousands of
years ago. It has a rich oral history cap-
tured within its colourful folklore, poet-
ry, music and songs. Recent excavations
reveal high levels of craftsmanship in
pottery, iron work and jewellery. Indeed
anyone interested in African creativity
will find an abundance of it in its weav-
ing, metallurgy, leatherwork, masonry,
pottery, sculpture, furniture, architec-
ture and weaponry.
Africa is today increasingly attracting the
world’s attention that goes beyond
humanitarian concerns. It has been pre-
dicted that by 2010, Sub-Saharan Africa
will become an important source of energy
equal to the richness of the present-day
Middle-East. The United States, Europe,
China and India are among many other
countries that are competing to gain
access to Africa’s rich sources of oil, natu-
ral gas and minerals. There is keen inter-
est to pour in investments, win contracts
and build political influence in the conti-
nent. Africa is changing as more govern-
ments shift towards improved gover-
nance and seek ways to expand their
economies. Education is an area of keen
interests as Africa recognises the need to
empower its next generation with new
skills to manage the challenges of a fast
evolving world.
 EUROPE
Cradle of modern day
creativity and innovation
The Industrial Revolution of 1760 - 1830
that began in Great Britain and that
completely transformed Europe as well as
America was a period of intense innova-
tion. New inventions and discoveries in
agriculture, transportation, textile and metal
manufacture influenced innovation in
economic policies and also changed the
social structure of these countries. The
Industrial Revolution, in effect, changed
the world.
The Industrial Revolution had a great
impact on wealth creation opportuni-
ties as it provided stability in income
generation.
The countries that comprise Europe have
long traditions in trade, transportation,
manufacturing, finance and other eco-
nomic activities. The formation of the
European Union consolidates the indi-
vidual strengths of these countries and
it is this diversity that makes Europe an
exciting prospect in the coming years.
This is a union that brings together 455
million people. It is a single entity find-
ing its balance to rewrite how the world
engages in trade. There is a quiet revo-
lution taking place in Europe where tra-
ditional values in trade and commerce
are being challenged. Some even refer
to it as an “emerging empire”. The fol-
lowing facts reveal the reason why.
The European Union is today the world’s
leading exporter and the biggest inter-
national commercial market on earth. It
is the largest trader in goods and services
in the world.
The EU Gross Domestic Product of
USD10.5 trillion exceeded the United
States’ USD10.4 trillion in 2003. The
EU currency – the EURO – is stronger
than the US Dollar. In many of the world’s
leading industries, it is European transna-
tional companies that dominate business
and trade.

It is the power of knowledge that has fueled
Man’s progress. Our minds, from young,
probe the world around us to know and to
understand. And it is this insatiable appetite
for knowledge that keeps us advancing,
moving forward and crossing into new
frontiers.
As a result the world has grown smaller and
more connected. And always it is the best
minds that make the leaps of imagination
that pull others to see the world in a new light.
The human mind is an amazing tool. To be
able to unlock its full potential is the challenge
that we all face as we race each other to make
headway in this new world.
And never before has the education of
people been as important as it has become
today. Education has reached a high level
of sophistication in its organization, espe-
cially in the more developed countries.
These countries have set the examples that
many of the other countries base their
own infrastructure for education.
They have set the benchmarks that the rest
of us try to match. But every country has
its own level of development and many of
these economies are on the wrong side of
the digital divide that has created huge
inequalities and huge issues.
This is a development that is unfortunate.
Looking back in history, Asian countries
originally created learning environments
for mental, physical and spiritual develop-
ment that date back centuries. India, China
and Japan all have had established learning
centres thousands of years before the Europeans.
The Egyptians had a schooling system in
place between 3,000 and 500 BC.
Widespread colonization by the Europeans
has, in many instances, supplanted home-
grown methodologies with imported style
and content that have influenced the struc-
ture of education in many countries today.
Today completion of a degree in a Western
university is desired and highly sought. In
a globalised world where multinationals rule
a degree from a Western university is seen
to carry more weight. The outflow of funds
from Asian shores amounts to billions every
year as hundreds of thousands of young
Asians compete to gain admission into
these universities.
Education is our key to successfully meet
future challenges because education is about
empowering the next generation. Education,
over the next 10 years, will, most assuredly,
undergo tremendous changes. Technology
will make sure of that. But to what extent
is anybody’s guess.
Will we be able to put a chip in our bodies
that will load up any information that we
need without having to study the books?
Imagine how this development will change
everything. There may be no more exami-
nations and no more homework. Schools
may change to allow young people to acquire
the soft skills they will need to interact
with others, perform their jobs with excel-
lence, flesh out latent talents or learn to lead.
Keeping learning practical
and relevant
As a university of the 21st century, we are
compelled to look forward and attempt to
visualize what the future will look like.
This enables us to gauge the new trends in
technology, new discoveries and new
research that we need to dovetail into the
university’s curriculum, otherwise the
learning that we have now will become
obsolete when students graduate. Their
skills and knowledge will be useless and
they will end up doing jobs that have
nothing to do with their training.
It is important to avoid creating a mis-
match between what students learn in
schools and what careers demand of people
 when they graduate and seek employment.
The paper chase has grown very intense.
The education sector offers the student a
bewildering number of courses they can
study. But it is important that parents don’t
just look at obtaining the best degrees
without checking out how else a college

Education must aim to produce capable,
knowledgeable and skilled human capital
needed to sustain the economic progress
of a country. Curricula developed by

on concepts and theories will distance the

In today’s climate of global competition

tiations with people from other countries.
As it is, rising cost of labour is forcing
industry to move from country to country
to take advantage of better tax incentives
and lower wages offered by emerging
economies. We can only make a difference
via better skilled and more knowledgeable
workers.
The K-economy depends on the high calibre
of such human resources. And by high calibre
we cannot just define it through academic
results. We must include emotional intel-
ligence, excellent work ethics and good
attitude. We must also include a high level

take place.

industry in the formulation of curricula
for schools, colleges and universities.
