Types of Learning
1. Signal Learning

Example:

A nursing student may feel anxious every time he/she hears

about return demonstration and he/she is surprised to be the
first one to perform. So every time there are demonstrations
all students are very anxious if they will be surprised to be
the first one to perform.

2. Stimulus-Response Learning

Example:

A clinical instructor may tell his students, “If you encounter a

patient with fever and it is usually determine by having
temperature of above 37.4 degree Celsius, you should do the
tepid sponge bath or the so called “TSB”. That is the first
nursing management to patient with fever”. So the student
does tepid sponge bath every time he/she encounters
patient with fever.

3. Chaining

Example:

After doing Tepid Sponge Bath, the second thing will the
student do is to advice the patient to wear loose clothing so
that the heat from his/her body will be release through the
process of convection.

8. Problem Solving

Example:

C.I: What practices will you do to prevent the transmission

of microorganisms that may cause infection to you
patient?

S: I should wear protective measurements like mask,

gloves, gown and protective eyewear if necessary.

C.I: That’s a nice answer. By practicing those standard

precautions, you can protect your patient and also
yourselves. What will you do about practicing aseptic
technique when carrying the doctor’s order like
invasive procedures?

S: You should not use same needle and syringe to other

patient when administering medications. They should
have separate one.
C.I: Very well said. That will prevent the spread of infection
and communicable disease like HIV that can be
transmitted through needle and syringe. What about
preventing urinary infection?

S: You should maintain a closed urinary drainage system

with a downhill flow of urine and also you should keep
the drainage bag and spout off the floor.

C.I: Correct. That will prevent back flow of urine if you will
put the urine bag downhill and under the bed.

S: But we should bear in our minds that the number one

management to prevent spread of infection is to do
hand washing. This is a technique that should be done
by all nurses before and after giving care.
