States and Violence/Violence and the State

1st Annual Interdisciplinary Student Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS


We invite papers from graduate and undergraduate students on the topic of Violence and
the State and States and Violence. What is the relationship between the state and violence,
in what areas does it take place, how is it effected, who are the actors, who are the victims?
Are there levels of collaborations between state and non-state elements? What is the role of
global and transnational forces in the causes and modalities of violence?
Some broad topics include, but are not limited to:
Causes and Responses to Terrorism Violence of Extraction Economies, and
State Regulation of the Family violence to the Environment
Labor Laws and Exploitation Imperialism and Military Occupation
Migration and the Policing of Borders Redefining State Power
Corporations and Cheapening of Labor Disciplining of Sexuality
Privatization and Dispossession of Public
Assets
The Political Economy of Policing and Legalization and Illegalization of Spheres
Incarceration of Social Life

Interested graduate and undergraduate students should submit a 300 word abstract
research paper proposal to IntConference2011@gmail.com by FEBRUARY 14th, 2011.
Conference presentations will be 15 minutes or less. We plan one morning session for
undergraduate papers and an afternoon session for graduate students.
Prizes and recognition will be awarded to outstanding graduate and undergraduate papers.
