TIMES CITY THE TIMES OF INDIA, VARANASI FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 2011 Kabir Chaura Mutt mahant seeks security ‘TIMES NEWS NETWORK Varanasi: Fearing threat to his life, the ma- hant of Sidhpeeth Kabir Chaura Mutt, sant Vivekdas Acharya, has writtena letter to the state government and local administra- tion seeking security anda high level probe into the attempts made on his life in the past. The letter was sent to the chief minister, principal secretary, DGP, district magistrate, IG, chief justice of Allahabad High Court, district judge and also the Chetganj police station. The Kabir Chaura Mutt, the seat of sant Kabirdas, has nowadays become a centre of property disputes. ‘The police and local administration had to intervene into the matter on April 25, 2010, when a group of armed supporters of for- mer mahant Ganga Sharan Das had reached the mutt during a ‘bhandara’. The police had also detained six persons with arms. While former mahant alleged that Vivekdas, who was made the acting ma- _ hant in 1999 to look after the management of mutt, started selling the mutt’s proper: ties, the current mahant alleged that some land mafia and supporters of Ganga Sha- ran Das are trying to capture the property of mutt. PROPERTY DISPUTE The police had arrested former mahant Ganga Sharan Das on April 27, 2010, and sent him to jail on the charges of criminal tres- pass. In his letter dated January 22 to DIG, Vivekdas expressed threat to his life and de- manded security. He alleged that some ‘crim- inal-minded’ followers of former mahant are trying to eliminate him. He said that a poisonous snake was left in his room in Au- gust last, while some toxic substance was mixed in his milk three months back. He further alleged that a shooter has also been given a contract to kill him. He also said that efforts are being made to malign the image of the mutt.
