Enzyme Inhibitors

Competitive: A competitive inhibitor will compete with the substrate to use the active site, however
it will bind with the enzyme and prevent future substrates from entering it and stops an enzyme-
substrate complex being formed.

Non-competitive: A non-competitive inhibitor does not fit into the active site of an enzyme, instead
it binds elsewhere on the enzyme. This causes the active site to distort and change shape so enzyme-
substrate complexes are no longer able to be formed.

Effect of enzyme concentration: There is a point whereby all the active sites of the enzymes present
are occupied and this can act as a limiting factor during a reaction as it cannot physically go any
faster.

Substrate concentration: The more substrates there are, the higher the probability of a collision
between substrate and enzyme, so therefore there is an increase in the likelihood of a reaction.
