Senior Coach to St.Patrick’s Institution’s Chess and Checkers players is Max Brohan,
Prison Officer and Irish Chess Champion 1993.
Currently there are 26 officers on the panel willing and able to teach the inmates chess
and checkers.
Members of the Management Team encouraged and fully supported this initiative both
past and present :

The Management in October 1992 introduced formal chess lessons for the
inmates of St. Patrick’s Institution. The prison officers themselves conduct
these lessons during the recreation periods seven days a week.
Historical Fact! First time that a Chess Club visited an Irish Prison.
