f you don’t think of the Danville/
Boyle County area as a hub for
innovation, think again. Thanks
to cutting-edge technology in the
city and county schools, education is
earning top marks in southeast
Kentucky.
Danville Independent and
Boyle County Schools
One of the major advances taking
place in Kentucky schools is the
Innovation Lab, a partnership forged
between Boyle County and Danville
Independent Schools, the Kentucky
Department of Education, the University
of Kentucky, Centre College and the
Council of Chief State School Officers.
“The goal of the project is to truly
change the way we approach education
in the 21st century. Schools today still
function much like they did 50 years
ago,” says Dr. Carmen Coleman,
Danville schools superintendent.
“The practical approaches can be the
same, but we’re teaching students for
a world that is very different. We want
to provide a safe place for innovating,
a place where teachers can get out of the
traditional school setting and try some
very different things.”

questions, persevere, access and
analyze information, think critically,
problem-solve and communicate, as
these are critical skills for success in
today’s world.
“We know that to be motivated
to learn and do the work, we’ve got
to share the work with the kids,”
Dr. Coleman says. “We have to teach
kids to access and analyze information.
Schools used to be the keepers of
information, but now our task is very
different: We have to teach kids to use
the vast amounts of information that
are available.”
The lab is located at Centre College,
which is convenient to both Danville and
Boyle County schools. Plans are to open
in the 2011-2012 school year. For more
information about the schools involved
in the Innovation Lab partnership, visit

Kentucky School
for the Deaf
The Kentucky School for the Deaf
also utilizes technology to create a
better educational atmosphere for its
students. Thanks to Smart Boards,
video conferencing equipment,
videophones and other tech tools,
students at KSD have a better
opportunity to learn visually.
“All of our classrooms have Smart
Boards, so everything we do can be
presented visually,” says Rodney Buis,
principal. “The students can use the
touch screens to access the Internet and
learning software. We also have video
conferencing equipment that links our
classrooms to other deaf schools across
the country. That allows our students to
communicate with other deaf students
directly through sign language.”
