Gerrard Presencer: Practise And Warm-Up Exercises

Warm Up 1.

For this exercise, breathe through the nose, and try not to move the
mouthpiece (or trumpet) at all in-between the phrases. For the second
half of the phrases, use the alternate fingering as written, which are
taken from a semi-tone directly above the target note.

Exercise.1

The following exercise can be practised through simply using the degrees
(or number) of the scale that you are working on, an example is also
shown below:-

N.B:- Play each phrase twice, the first time should be played legato (or
slurred), the second time should be played with jazz articulation
(da-di-ya-di-ya).

Play all major and minor keys, along with altered and pentatonic:-

Here is the pattern which can be translated and transposed into any key.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1, 2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1-2, 3-4-5-4-3-2-1-2-3,

4 -5 4 -3 -2 -1 -2-3 -4, 5 -4 -3 -2 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5, 4-3 -2 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 - 4,

3- 2 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -4 -3, 2 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -4 -3 - 2, 1 -2 -3 -4 -5 - 4 -3 -2-1

Exercise 2.

Use the same principle on this exercise as the previous one , transpose into all
keys and also create phrases with various combinations and numbers of the notes
contained within the exercise, ie, use rubato.
Emphasise jazz articulation (da-di-ya-di-ya), and also practise straight and with
breath-attacks.

Practise Hints:-

Comping

y Listen to Wynton Kelly comping on the album Kind of Blue (especially

the left hand), transcribe what he does rhythmically underneath the
soloists, ie:
y Practice these rhythms over standards (if using Jamey Abersole, turn
off the piano (treble) if possible and play along with the bass and
drums.

y You can also practice these exercises only with the metronome
(clicking on 2 + 4).

y At the beginning, make sure you rest 4 bars and play 4 bars.

y When learning standards, it is imperative that they are played and

learnt in all keys.

y Finally, learn to play standards in odd times, either in 5 or 7, as this

gives us chance to learn and place the notes very carefully within the
phrasing. Also, divide the bar into 12 for articulation and feel as
shown below:-
