INTRODUCTION
 Essar Steel is one of India's largest exporters of flat products,
exporting to the highly demanding US and European markets,
and to the growing markets of South East Asia and the Middle
East.
 Versatile manufacturer , capable of producing customized
products.
 One of the India's largest HRC producers and exporter of HRC
to discerning customers in all corners of the globe.
 A number of companies like the Caterpillar, Hyundai, the
Konkan Railway, and Maruti Suzuki use this steel.
HISTORY
 The name of Essar is derived from the first letter of the two
brothers ‘Shashi’ and 'Ravi’ ‘S’ as ‘ESS’ & ‘R’ as ‘AR’.
 The Essar Group was founded in 1969 by brothers Shri Shashi
Ruia and Shri Ravi Ruia.
 The steelmaking business was started by setting up India’s first
sponge iron plant in Hazira.
 Construction business helped, building the most of its business
assets.
PRODUCTION OF STEEL
 IRON ORE PROCESSING:-
 Iron ore is got from the mines of Baliadila in Madhya Pradesh.
 Raw materials are screened to remove the fines size of max 50 ×
50 mm
 The fines of the iron ore are sent to high –grade palletizing plant
at Vizag.
 Crushing of Iron ore
 It is screened from the fines before
charging for the production of
HBI/DRI.

Steel Making Process
 Depending upon the quality of the steel required a particular ratio
of raw iron ore and the pellets approximately 60:40 or 70:30 are
charged in to the hopper of the vertical shaft furnace.
 Melting process.
 Refined and alloy additions in the ladle furnace are made.
 Casting of the hot metal as slabs at casters .
 Metallic iron, HBI, Steel scrap and Hot
DRI are fed in to the Electric arc furnace
as raw material.
 The capacity of EAF is maximum 150 ton.
The arc is struck between the graphite
Cathode and the liquid steel.
 Ladle Refining Furnace.
 Three graphite electrode are immersed in to the furnace to
maintain the temperature and argon gas is purged from the bottom
to prevent the re -oxidation of the steel.
 Vacuum de-gassing.
 Two continuous casters are present.
 Molten steel passes through the oscillating copper mould, which is
coated with nickel. Finally a slab is formed.
