Dear Bob,
I have heard the great news that you are moving to Ontario to complete your high school
education! I hope that you have a great time over here, but before you start school, I would like
to explain how the entire school system works over here. It starts off with credits. Every
successful course that you complete, you will receive a credit. You need 30 credits to graduate.
From those 30 credits, 12 are elective credits, which means they are courses that you want to do
and the other 18 are mandatory credits such as English. Throughout grades 9-12 you need: 4
Canadian geography, 1 in Canadian history, 1 art credit (drama, media arts, visual arts, music), 1
physical education credit and 1 civics/careers credit. If you follow this guide, then you will
receive all your credits. But if you go deeper into credits then you will learn about,
one will be designed to prepare you for your future. For example, academic - university -
professional job. Also, in some courses, you need pre requisites. The reason being that if you
take grade 12 science without gr.9 science then you will be lost. You will not have the same
knowledge as other students. This is why some courses require pre-requisites. To complete your
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (which is required for university) you need to complete 40
hours of community service and you must pass the OSSLT which is the Ontario Secondary
School Literacy Test. It is a standard test throughout Ontario and you have to pass it to graduate.
These are the requirements to graduate from high school. Also, at school, the administration has
an OSR which in your Ontario Student Record. You can ask them for report cards or suspension
papers. The last thing is your OST. This stands for the Ontario Student Transcript which is a
formal document of all your marks in all of your courses. This is usually used for universities,
when applying. Anyways, I will thoroughly explain all of these concepts to you when you settle
Sincerely,
Amrit Priyadarshee
