ECOM442 – Data Communication & Networks


(2nd Semester AY 2010-2011)

Catalog Data This course provides exercises and labs to supplement the data
communication and Network course (ECOM432). It helps students to gain
the knowledge and practice the skills associated with computer networks.
The lab experiments cover Cabling and Testing, Building a Network,
Switching Basics and Intermediate Routing, Network Monitoring, and
Wireless LAN.

by topics Each student should have a general knowledge of computer systems.

Course Objectives:
1. Reinforce data communication and networking concepts.
2. Gain networking skills.

Course Outcomes:
By the end of the term, you should be able to:
1. Use the WireShark network protocol analyzer software to capture, display, and analyze traffic
from a live network [K].
2. Use and configure network applications using the Packet Tracer simulation tool. [K].
3. Learn how TCP and UDP apply to common applications [K].
4. Practice IP addressing, subnetting, and building and configuring a complex network [K].
5. Examine ARP frames and switch MAC address tables [K].
6. Design and cable a network, connect devices, and develop an addressing and testing scheme
[K].
