A Biography of the life of the Honourable James Manoah

Bodden

Mr. Jim Bodden as called by his Caymanian people was born


in 1930 in Lower Valley, Bodden Town. His father was a
seaman.

When he was seventeen years old he migrated to live in Texas.


He settled ashore and married to an American becoming a US
citizen, during the next twelve years he worked as a private
detective; he sold costume jewelleries and also owned a taxi cab
company.

In the 1960’s he returned to the Cayman Islands with his plan to


start a hotel business but his plan failed. He went back to work
at sea and then returned home again and became involved in a
charter boat business, he also started a Real Estate Company.
Mr. Jim also donated land in Newlands to build the campus for
the International College of the Cayman Island.

Mr. Jim Bodden entered Politics in 1972 and won a seat for
Bodden Town he served two terms as a member of the
Executive Council. In 1976 the government decided that it was
time for the Cayman Island to have its own national airline. The
idea was strongly supported by Mr. Jim Bodden who was the
Minister responsible for Tourism, Aviation and Trade. In 1977
Cayman Airways became wholly owned by the Cayman Islands,
soon after the Owens Roberts International Airport was
constructed.

In 1984 Mr. Jim Bodden was re-elected but he served as a


backbench MLA for the rest of his life

The pirate week festival was originated by Mr. Jim Bodden


and Mr. Mike Lockwood as a fun filled events for adults and
families, this was done to attract tourists during the slow
summer months.
Mr. Jim was a very special person because he looked out for
his Cayman people. He was very determined, friendly but also a
person with vision which enabled him to be declared as
Caymans first National hero in 1993 when the law was passed.

Mr. Jim Bodden died in 1988 and received the honor of a state
funeral. In 1994 a statute in his image was dedicated to him at
the Hero’s Circle now known as the Heroes Squares.
