PBR changes into PPBR

Pontianak, West Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - The Reform Star Party (PBR) which failed to meet a 3 percent electoral threshold in
the 2004 elections decided to form a new party called the United Reform Star Party (PPBR) at its three-day national congress which
ended here on Sunday.

Party chief Bursah Zarnubi told the press here on Sunday that under article 9 of Law No. 12 on General Elections, a political party
which did not meet the electoral threshold was allowed to set up a new party or coalesce with other party so that it could take part in
the next elections.

In the 2004 elections, PBR only gained 2,764,998 votes or 2.44 percent lower than the 3 percent electoral threshold.

The party was expected to introduce its new symbol to the public on January 20 next year, coinciding with its fifth anniversary, he
added.

He added, however, that legislators from the PBR would continue their struggle to get a 2 percent threshold approved by the House
of Representatives (DPR).

If it was approved, he added, the PPBR would automatically be disbanded and the party executive board would use the PBR in the
2009 elections.

The party also agreed that candidates nominated by the party for legislative membership in the next elections must be less than 40
years old.

He also expressed his optimism that the party would gain eight percent of the votes to be cast in the 2009 elections. (*)
