a. Explicación y usos

El presente continuo se utiliza para referirnos a situaciones que están ocurriendo en el momento o
cuando se está en la mitad de dicha acción, por ejemplo: Yo estoy escribiendo un libro (no lo estoy
escribiendo en este preciso instante pero por el momento me dedico a eso). Tú estás leyendo
ahora/En estos momentos ellos están estudiando (en este preciso instante).

En inglés el presente continuo se forma de la siguiente manera:

Verbo TO BE conjugado + el gerundio del verbo principal de la frase.

You (pronombre personal) + are (verbo to be conjugado según el pronombre personal) + studying
(verbo en gerundio)

YOU ARE STUDYING NOW (ahora mismo)

PETER IS STUDYING REALLY HARD FOR HIS EXAM THIS WEEK (En el momento, durante toda la
semana)

En español, el gerundio se forma agregando las palabras “ANDO” “ENDO” a la forma infinitiva del
verbo. Es decir:

FORMA INFITITIVA = COMER GERUNDIO= COMIENDO

EN INGLÉS, el gerundio se forma agregando la terminación ING

FORMA INFINITIVA = (to) Look - (to) Eat - (to) Sleep

GERUNDIO= Looking - Eating - Sleeping

El gerundio nos va a permitir construir otros tiempos verbales. Por el momento

estudiamos el presente continuo.

OJO! El gerundio tiene diferentes usos, pero por ahora solo lo aprenderemos para
construir los tiempos continuos de las formas verbales. En próximos niveles haremos
referencia al gerundio y sus otros usos cuando sea preciso.
Spelling changes

La ortografía de algunos verbos debe modificarse cuando añadimos ING.

* En la mayoría de verbos terminados en consonante-vocal-consonante debes duplicar la última

letra:

Cut Cutting
Cancel Cancelling
Admit Admitting
Begin Beginning

* Cuando el verbo termina en “e” debes eliminar la e y agregar el ING en reemplazo:

Write Writing
Smoke Smoking
Live Living
Give Giving

Estructura general para crear frases en presente continuo:

ORACIÓN AFIRMATIVA:

PRONOMBRE PERSONAL + VERBO TO BE + VERBO EN GERUNDIO + COMPLEMENTO

They are reading a book now.

He is traveling around the world.
I am eating pizza.

ORACIÓN NEGATIVA:

PRONOMBRE PERSONAL + VERBO TO BE + NEGACIÓN + VERBO EN GERUNDIO + COMPLEMENTO

They aren’t reading a book. / They are not reading a book.

He isn’t traveling around the world. / He is not traveling around the world.
I’m not eating pizza. / I am not eating pizza.
ORACIÓN INTERROGATIVA:

VERBO TO BE + PRONOMBRE PERSONAL + VERBO EN GERUNDIO + COMPLEMENTO + ?

Are they reading a book?

Is he traveling around the world?
Am I eating pizza?

Present continuous – WH questions (El presente continuo en su forma interrogativa con

preguntas WH)

Para preguntar por las condiciones de la situación que se está describiendo (cuándo, dónde, quién,
por qué, cómo) usamos las siguientes palabras de interrogación: WHAT – WHEN – WHERE – WHO
– WHY – HOW.

Estructura: PALABRA DE INTERROGACIÓN (WH QUESTION) + VERBO TO BE + SUJETO + VERBO EN

GERUNDIO + COMPLEMENTO DE LA ORACIÓN.

ATENCIÓN! En las frases interrogativas el sujeto y el verbo TO BE conjugado cambian de

lugar.

You are working at home now (affirmative sentence)

Are you working at home now? (Interrogative sentence)
Where are you working now? (Wh - question)

Short Answers

Para responder a las preguntas que requieren un SI o un NO como respuesta usamos las
respuestas cortas.

A la pregunta: Are they working now? Podemos responder: Yes, they are working now; o de
manera corta: Yes, they are.

Estructura:

YES + SUJETO + VERBO TO BE (no se utilizan contracciones)

NO +SUJETO + VERBO TO BE + NEGACIÓN (NOT) (a menudo se utiliza con contracciones)

My children are watching TV.

What are you reading now?

They are not working hard these days.

Where are they working?

Lis, are you enjoying the party?

Yes, I am. (Short answer)

Are you leaving now?

No, we aren’t. (Short answer)

Are they smoking?

No, they are not / Yes, they are. (Short answers)
