Dear Seventh Grade A-Side Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

Beginning this week, we have decided to allocate two additional blocks of academic time
to math. As a team, we have collaborated and devised a plan where two of your child’s
“double-block” classes will become math based. During these periods on Thursdays and
Fridays, the entire team will focus on learning current grade level math concepts and
reteaching the most difficult standards.

The goal of this collaborative effort is to increase our students' understanding of math.
Our current plans, under the direction of the math teacher, is to work with all students on
math. Further, we have selected some students to be peer tutors. We experimented with
this idea during the students’ regularly scheduled tutorial class on Wednesday, March
16th. The peer tutoring was well received and our tutors did a commendable job!

We are looking to continue to pilot this idea beginning this week and up until the Math
MCAS exams in May. Nearly half way through our plan, we will survey the students to
see if they like the program, feel like they are learning more, and especially to see
whether or not our tutors continue to enjoy working with their peers. If our data reveals
dissatisfaction or a willingness to pursue a different enrichment activity, we will modify
our plans, especially for our tutors. We have also discussed alternatives for our tutors
including guided enrichment projects within the field of humanities.
