Colloquy X:

Antonio and Mellida

by John Marston (1601)
Spring 2011

*Due 4/5 by 11:59pm (Tuesday evening)

Synecdoche:
“A whole is represented by naming one of its parts.”1 (for examples see Silva Rhetoricae website)

Epanalepsis:
“Repetition of the same word or clause after intervening matter.”2

What To Do:
1. Read Act Five, scene one from Marston’s Antonio and Mellida (provided for you on Blackboard).
2. Create a post on the Colloquy of no fewer than 300 words in which you rewrite this early modern
dramatic comedy in contemporary prose form (it is currently in dramatic form with speech prefixes [i.e.
the names/abbreviated names that precede dialogue]). Your post needs to contain at least one of the
two rhetorical devices listed above. If you feel your update of the scene requires new names for the
characters, then feel free to rename them – but please use your discretion.
3. You must also respond to two Colloquy authors’ posts. Please note that just stating something along the
lines of, “Your use of ___________ was really effective,” is not a significant comment. If you believe
their use of the rhetorical device is effective, how and why is it?
