Objective:
 To have students understand how different resources allow sides to have an
advantage in war
 For students to recognize the resources that the Unites States had available
during the civil war and how it was distributed

Teacher’s Goals:
 For students to practice skills of reading maps
 For students to use logical skills

Time: 25-30 min


5 min Start of class: Teacher poses the questions to students on what they
think is needed for a country to win a war. Teacher writes answers on
the smartboard.
5 min Introduction to the lesson: Teacher informs students that the lesson
will be on the resources that were important to both the Union and
Confederate states leading up to and during the Civil War
10 min Lesson Instruction:
1. Teacher goes through the powerpoint presentation and discusses
the information on the slide with the students
2. After each set of information, teacher with facilitate a short
discussion on the information that each of the maps presents.
3. The class decides together whether the resource was more of an
advantage for the Union states or the Confederate states.
4. Students fill out the worksheet to be glued into spiral notebooks
5. At the end of the presentation, students use smartboard to sort
out the different resources that the Union and Confederate states
had

Checks for understanding: Teacher will keep an eye on the note sheets
that students will fill out during lesson.
5 min Closure: Teacher will bring up the original list that the students created
and see if the resources discussed in the lecture were on the list.

Self-Assessment: Teacher will reflect on how the lesson went
