LEVEL 1

Conveying the basic properties of an object.

Tutorial: Bouncing Ball Interaction

Objectives:
To demonstrate, differences in weight, mass and behaviour of objects using timing(spacing) and posing.

Goal:
Using the given 3 balls, give each one a distinct property listed below.
-A balloon
-A rubber ball
-A cannon ball(heavy metal ball)
Animation should show the three balls falling from top, interacting with walls and each other. Frame the camera
so it looks like this is happening in a room.

Some important pointers:

• Thumbnail and plan your animation before starting out on the execution.
• Use actual reference from real objects or footage to get a clear idea of these required physical
properties.
• Newton's laws of Motion-
When a force acts on an object, the
object accelerates in the direction in which the force is acting. A force acting on a moving object will
speed it up, slow it down, or change the direction in which it is moving.
• An object in motion will remain in motion unless another external force acts on it.
• Every action has an equivalent and opposite reaction.

• Study of gravity and friction as factors affecting the objects movements.

• The amount of kinetic energy, the energy of movement, depends on the amount of matter and speed of
the moving object.
• Volume being constant, the shape of the objects changes as the result of collision and repulsion, i.e.,
object stretches based on its elasticity
when a force acts on it and on the other hand squashes when the force stops.
• An object moving through space will move in an arc if there are forces acting on it from more than one
direction.
• Ex:A thrown ball has two forces acting on it from two directions..gravity in the vertical axis and the initial
velocity it gained from the throw acting
on it in the horizontal direction. The gradual reduction of both these forces on the object results in an
arc like movement over time.

Assignment requirements:
• The camera should be stationary so as to avoid its affecting the perception of motion of the objects.
• Length of the animation should not exceed 200 frames. Try and plan your animation so as to fit within
this frame range.
• Avoid making modeling changes to suggest property of ball.
• Use appropriate framing and staging to allow clear visibility of the motion.
• Animator cannot use additional props.
