Organizational Application Of

Counselling Skills

• A manager who uses skills effectively will
address problems, and will encourage people
to come to him/her with problems before they
become major issues, thus making the
department run more smoothly in the long
term.
• There are some specific areas in the
organization where counselling skills can be
applied.
1. CHANGE MANAGEMENT

• In order to create and maintain competitive


advantage, companies have to be flexible
about changing environment.
• Employees require counselling to cope with
and adjust to change, but also to support and
motivate employees during periods of change.
2. DOWNSIZING
• Sometimes organizations alter basic size of their
organizational chart, means reducing the number of
employees to operate effectively, is called as
downsizing.
• When a large number of people are made redundant
employees, will require counselling at many levels,
to make remaining staff more motivated and
committed will improve their morale and reassure
them that company will retain them for life long
time.
3. MANAGING DIVERSITY
• Most of the multinational companies have diverse
workforce comprising men and women of different
age, gender, race, religion and life style.
 Language differences: Communication is difficult or
even impossible.
 National ethnics groupings: Sometimes employees
can’t tend to form strong ethnic group on the basis of
similiarities, doesn’t promote working with others who don’t
share same language & cultural heritage.
 Attitude and cultural differences: Create
frustration, anger and bitterness

• The use of counseling skills can be invaluable in
organization which are implementing equal
opportunity policies.
Women get needed support and confidence by
counseling.
Men may require counseling it order to adapt to
organizational which is becoming less masculine.
5.Entrepreneurism/ Intrapreneurism
• Developing and guiding entrepreneurs require
a balance of high support levels along with a
high level of challenge.
• It is especially applicable to entrepreneurs who
tend to see their business as their baby and
have difficulty accepting outside advice.
6. MENTORING
• Mentors help mentees with personal objectives and
effectiveness, self confidence and self awareness as
they apply to organizational objectives, directly and
indirectly.
• This involve a mixture of counselling, coaching and
advising.

7. Team management
• Counseling skills can be used very effectively to
facilitate groups in problem solving, decision making
and conflict resolution.
• Sometimes a team will have difficulty working
together, even if there are only one or two problem
causers.

8. Conselling for older adult
• Adjusting to decreasing physical strength and health.
• Adjusting to retirement and reduced income.
• Adjusting to the death of a spouse.
• Establishing an explicit association with one’s age
group.
• Adopting and adapting societal roles in a flexible
way.
• Opting for pre- retirement counselling.
9. Crisis/Trauma
• The situation of excessive stress.
• E.g.- accidents leading to serious injury or death,
bomb blasts, theft, fire, raids, kidnapping, other
natural disasters.
• Experienced trauma counsellors should be summoned
when a severe crisis occurs.
10. Consulting
• In many industries, counselling skills are
extremely useful for working with clients as
well as with subordinates.
11. Upward feedback
• Upward feedback is feedback from subordinates
regarding their managers performance.
• The best way to manage this sensitive situation is for
the manager or supervisor’s own manager to talk
about the issues, which arise from upward feedback
in a counselling style.
