Basketball Skills Class Modifications Most pre-designed games do not take into account the skill level ofall children. As a result, those athletes who are skilled in a particular game may take control of the game, while other less skilled children do not have an opportunity to participate fully. The reflective teacher will be able to incorporate modifications into a pre-designed game that allows all children to experience success in physical education. The different ways that a sport can be modified include: number of players, the objective of the game, player movement, choice of equipment, organization (layout) of the class, amount of space, the rules of the game, and the number of skills involved. In the game of basketball for 4" graders there are many modifications that can be made to ensure that students of all levels of ability can experience some degree of success. Playing on half-court allows students with less aerobic ability to participate more fully. Dividing a basketball court in half also allows for two games to be played at the same time. These games could be played 3 on 3 with frequent substitutions, so that those children who need more playing time to practice skills such as ball handling and dribbling can have more touches on the ball. Equipment can be modified by lowering the basketball hoop and using smaller balls. When the basketball hoop is lowered there is more opportunity for students to make more baskets, thereby increasing the feeling of success for more students. Smaller basketballs also allow children who are having difficulty handle the ball better, thereby increasing their skill level and their feeling of success. Adopting a rule which prohibits the awarding of three point shots for a three point shot evens the playing field for all students. Those who can take the shot will do so, ‘therefore not holding anyone back, and those who cannot yet make that shot can still contribute meaningfully to the tearn’s score. For defensive modifications, a “no press” rule can be adopted, which allows the students to progress half-way down the court before the other team is allowed to pressure the player with the ball. Also, 2 rule that does not allow double ‘teaming of the person with the basketball gives students an opportunity for more success in dribbling, passing, and shooting.
