Once, there lived a poor woodcutter. One day, while he was cutting wood on the bank of
a river,
his axe fell into the river. The poor woodcutter did not know how to swim.
“Oh dear!” he cried. “My axe is lost! How can I get it back?” Just then a river fairy
emerged from the river.
The river fairy said, “I am Angeline the river fairy. Why are you so upset?”
“I have lost my axe,” said the woodcutter. “Let me help you,” said Angeline. She sank
into the water and was back a moment later.
She held a golden axe. “Is this your axe? She asked. “Oh no!” said the woodcutter.
“That is not my axe.”
Angeline sank back into the water again. This time she came up with a silver axe. “Is this
your axe?” she asked.
“Oh no, no!” said the woodcutter. “How can a poor woodcutter like me own such an
expensive axe?” He continued, “My axe is made of wood, its blade is made of iron.”
Angeline smiled. She sank into the water again. This time she returned with the iron axe.
“Is this your axe?” she asked. The woodcutter said, “Yes, this is my axe. Thank you very
much."
Angeline said, “You are welcome. You are a good and honest man. I like you very
much.” She continued, “As a reward for your honesty, you can keep all the three axes.”
Saying this, she handed all the three axes to the woodcutter. Then she disappeared into
the water. The woodcutter sold the gold and silver axes and become rich.
