PROPOSED NEW RESEARCH PROJECTS (INCLUDING SCANS) - FOR 2006/7

PORTFOLIO : Grid Operations

INITIATOR : Nhlanhla Mbuli
PROJECT TITLE : Utilization of Phase Shifting Transformer in Transmission Networks
PROJECT No : (Eskom will supply – please leave blank)

BACKGROUND LINKAGE TO STAKEHOLDERS

Phase shifting transformers can be used to • LINKAGE TO LINE GROUPS –

control active power flow in a power system in Transmission, Distribution, Consultants.
a very efficient way. Some utilities
internationally use this device for this ability. • LINKAGE TO OVERSEAS BODIES –
Utilities, Consultants, Manufacturers.
PROJECT STATEMENT / HYPOTHESIS /
OBJECTIVE / PROBLEM STATEMENT GENERAL

The aim of this project is to evaluate how the None

phase shifting transformer can be used in the
Eskom Transmission network and what REFERENCES
benefits are likely to be obtained if this device
is introduced to the business. 1 Compiled by Bruce, G. Transmission

KEY RESEARCH QUESTION TO BE TSPG 001/95-01, 1996
ANSWERED
2 South African Grid Code, Network Code, 07
This phase of the research will cover theory of March 2003
phase shifting transformer and how it has
been used previously in practical power
systems. Essentially, a literature scan will be
conducted to answer the following key
questions.

1) How does the phase shifting transformer

influence the active power flow in a
meshed, transmission network?.

2) What sort of power system phenomena

(loadflows, short circuit, losses, voltage
stability, transient stability, small signal
stability, etc) can be impacted upon by
utilization of this device?

ULTIMATE DELIVERABLES OBJECTIVE

During this phase of the research a literature

and internet survey will be done. Preliminary
evaluation of this technology will be done.
Finally, a scan report will be produced.

TIME FRAME
1 year

BUDGET
R70 000

MAJOR OUTPUTS PER YEAR

2006/2007 Scan report

EXPECTED BENEFITS

Insight will be obtained on how the phase

shifting transformer works and how it can be
utilised in Eskom Transmission to optimize
network expansion investments.
