Re: UB 2020/ Empowerment Summit
Dear Governor Cuomo:
I am writing to respectfully request the inclusion of Binghamton University in the
upcoming UB 2020/ Empowerment Summit. I understand that advocates for the University
at Albany have recently made a similar appeal as well. All four University Centers deserve
the ability to participate in these discussions.
SUNY should not have second class University Centers. Binghamton, Albany, Buffalo and
Stony Brook are all part of an innovation ecosystem that provides the highest quality
education and fosters economic development through research and private partnerships.
These benefits are shared across the state. However, the creation of one, or even two,
flagships would create inequalities and an imbalance in the SUNY system that would hurt
communities like mine and jeopardize our state's economic recovery.
There is much at stake for Binghamton and all the University Centers at the UB 2020/
Empowerment Summit. I believe that by working together we can achieve positive reforms
that will benefit all of New York. We all want to make improvements that will help make
our state more competitive with other universities across the nation. Unfortunately, that
cannot happen if we are competing against each other on an uneven playing field. This
dialogue is an opportunity for all the University Centers to collaborate toward a positive
future that will impact researchers, business and communities across our great state.
‘Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Donna A. Lupardo
Member of Assembly
