Topic: Classical, Medieval, or Renaissance Art Lesson # 1

Performance: Introductory

Standards/Understanding Goal: Students Will develop their understanding of the


origins and developments of the Renaissance

WHI.29 Describe the origins and development of the Renaissance, including the influence and
accomplishments of Machiavelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Shakespeare, and
Johannes Gutenberg. (H)

Objectives:
Students will
 demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of art from the classical,
medieval, and Renaissance periods
 understand from which period Renaissance artists were inspired
 demonstrate an appreciation for the artistic advancements/achievements made
during the Renaissance
 draw connections between Classical art and Renaissance art

Materials:
LCD projector and PC, activity sheet, textbook History Alive! The Medieval World and
Beyond Teachers’ Curriculum Institute, response sheet

Procedures:
1. Teacher will lead a discussion on the characteristics and purposes of medieval art
(covered earlier in the curriculum)
2. Students will read and take notes on the characteristics of art from all three
periods: classical, medieval, and Renaissance.
3. Teacher will lead a brief discussion on the characteristics of classical and
Renaissance Art.
4. Teacher will project PPT on large screen using LCD projector.
5. Students will follow directions on the worksheet to make an educated guess on
the time period of several works of art.
6. Teacher will reveal the time period for each work of art as he/she progresses
through the PPT.
7. Students will record their guesses and the actual time period and characteristics of
each piece
8. Teacher will lead a brief discussion on which time period it appears Renaissance
artists were inspired by
9. Students will respond to the prompt (response sheet) for homework asking them
to reflect on the lesson and what they learned about art from all three time periods
and drawing connections between classical and Renaissance art.
